SPORTING.
FOOT RACE, £5O A-SIDE. (fkom our own correspondent.) NAPIER, Monday. A foot race, for £5O a-side was run on Saturday last on the Recreation ground, between Poole of Napier,, and Williams of Taupo, the latter winning after a most exciting race ever run in Napier. The Ist event (150 yards) was won by Poole by 3 yards in 16 secs. 2nd event (100 yards) resulted in a dead heat, Williams getting the best of the start ; time, 10| secs. For the 220 yards a magnificent race ensaed, Williams only winning on the post by a few inches ; time, 23f secs. In the run off for the 100 yards Poole unfortunately slipped in starting, Williams winning by about 3 yards in lOf secs. Hundreds of pounds changed hands over the event and great excitement prevailed. NAPIER STEEPLECHASE MEETING. The acceptances for the Hawke’s Bay Steeplechase and entrances f or the Maiden Steeplechase aud Ladies Bracelet close on Tuesday the 19th, at 8 p.m.
