Dawson, convicted on two charges of forgery, was sentenced to three years; Emanuel Edwards, for housebreaking, received three Years ; Ralph Crawford, for forgery, pleaded guilty, and was sentenced to four years ; Geo.. Alison, for unnatural offence, was acquitted } Te Whattt pleaded guilty to perjury, and was sentenced to three months ; fangata Te Kino aud Te Kura Rutene pleaded guilty on a charge of malicious assault, and Wero sentenced to twelve months. Judge Prendergast proceeds to Gisborne on Tuesday to hold circuit sittings. Mr G. Greenwood has been appointed Sherriff of the Poverty Bay district, CHRISTCHURCH, Wednesday. , The women of Sydenham at an indignation re Licensing Court, resolved to forward two pet-Lions to the Minister of Justice, condemning the action of the Court in granting new licenses. WELLINGTON, Wednesday. Jay and Haynes’ (Palmerston) tender, £13,615 has been accepted for the Tahoraite contract on the Napier-Wellington railway. The New Zealand Government have wired to Sir Dillon Bell, instructing him to place h imself in communication with and to act in -conjunction with the Agent-General of victoria respecting the annexation of the New Hebrides. The N Z. Shipping Co. *s lonic arrived at one o’clock on Monday morning under the command of E. A. Hallet, R.N,, after an uneventful passage of 43| days. It has been decided that Mr Shaw, member for Inangahua, will move, and Mr Lee, member for Selwyn, will second the Address in Reply. DUNEDIN, Wednesday. Heavy snow fell here on Monday. On Sunday Bishop Neville admitted Rev. T. Callaghan as priest to the Church of England. He formerly belonged to the Church of Rome. B. Thorpe, ratepayer of South Dunedin, was fined 40s and costs for assaulting the Mayor of South Dunedin at the late disorderly meeting. Other charges were withdrawn. The new railway goods shed was totally destroyed by fire on Tuesday night. Several trucks containing goods from the steamers Westmeath and Tara were in the shed at the time were destroyed. The estimated loss amounts to about £BO,OOO. It is a question whether, as goods had been stored from shipboard, the insurance risks are not at end. The shed only lately built, was 450 feet long, and cost £3OOO. The origin of the fire is a mystery. Mr Driver, M.H. FL, has met with an accident, which delays his attendance at Parliament.
AUCKLAND, Wednesday. A species of low fever is prevalent amongst the Natives at Hokianga. The Costley trustees are advised that all freeholds must be sold, and the proceeds divided. Some institutions are interested in bidding. Sir G. Grey, Sir G. M O’Rorke, Messrs. Hamlin, George, and Dignam left on Tuesday hy the Hinemoa, for Wellington. Mr Hobbs is unable to leave on account of the very serious illness of his father. The Mayor and Dr. Campbell, who went te Wellington as delegates from the Rotorua Railway Company, to secure aid from the Government in securing Native land endowments, have returned, having been unsuccessful in their mission. It is stated that another citizen has bequeathed a larger sum than the late Mr, Costley to the city; but if legacy duty be exacted probably the destination of a large portion of the bequest will be altered, HerickMon’s jeweller’s shop has been broken into, and jewellery to the amount of £l5OO stolen. No clue has been found as yet.
