The Rev. H. 8. Hamilton will conduct divine service at Makaraka to-morrow (Sunday) afternoon, at 3 o’clock. The Rev. Father P. Riordan, Roman Catholic Priest: appointed to Gisborne vice the Rev. Father Boyle, arrived by the s.s. Rotomahana yesterday. Yesterday afternoon Annie, second daughter of Mr. J. R. Morgan, one of our most respected residents in Gisborne, was married to Mr. Charles William Reardon, surveyor and civil engineer. The first pari of the marriage service was in the Roman Catholic Church Star ef the Sea, the Rev. Father Boyle officiating ; the second part, at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, by the Rev J Me Ara. At both churches there was a large attendance of friends and relations of the bride and bridegroom. A letter from the Borough Conncil was read in the County Council last night, with regard to the account of expenditure re the Governor’s lute visit, which amounted to £B5, and which requested a cheque for half that amount which was voted by the Council. Nothing of importance was done at the meeting of the Provisional Directors of the Gas Company hold on Thursday afternoon hist. The correspondence was read, and aftor considerable discussion it was resolved to adjourn the meeting till the following Thursday, the 14th instant. Mr. S. M. Wilson, of the Albion Club Hotel, informs the public that his Hotel is one of the most comfortable and reasonable in the town ; likewise that he has just replenished his stock of best and choicest brands of liquor and creature comforts. Mr. Wilson’s house is too well and favourably known to need anything beyond its own jecommendatian. We regret to state that Captain Porter is at present. laid up in bed, suffering frnn, we are informed, bronchitis a» d congestion of the lungs, but we hope shortly to announce his recovery, and to see him once more moving about.

Mr W. Schipper, watehnmksr jeweller, has now removed into a portion of those pre* raises just erected next Messrs, JPnrnell and Boylan’s Hall. Mr J. W. Bishop, cihemtst, occcuptes the other half, This position 'will prove of more advantage to them than those previously occupied, they being too artieh out of the wav.

At present there is a great wantin’ Gisborne and that is a good boarding house,, any one starting one of these now, would be Supplying a long felt want. We feel certain that foffie energetic person opening a good hCuse would make it pay to hie extreme SHthffiction. Competition in that line in Girbortie has always been difficult, Why so ? cannot say, though it is so. A good privytj boarding house must pay. There stci plenty of young men about this town whtf would far rather seek the liomiiness and eow.torts which a private boarding house would afford, than the more public places as they *ve. The following will be Gw order of the Roman Catholic religious services for Sun* day j—Ormond, at 8 a.m. Father Boyla will celebrate mass, with farewell sermon. Giaborne, at 11 a>m, Mass ; and introductory sermon by the Rev, Father P. Riordan ; and in the evening, at 7 p.m., Father Boyle will preach a farewell sermon,

We would draw th* at.ention of the County < ouncil to the disgraceful state of t e VSainui Road, the beach and Pakinkui. Persons have informed us that the mud is so deep that traffic is almost impossible, being up to tl»u horse's girth in some places, and the culverts having given way. Surely the r«»ads can be kept from getting into such a state as this if care be taken. We advise the Council to see to this road in question, and have it and the culverts repaired, otherwise, as is not unlikely, some accident will qeourr, and they will bo forced to meet the damages. The annual Presbyterian Church soiree will take place at the Church on the 30th of this month.

At the RM. Court yesterday morning several eases were called on, aft of which were adjourned to the loth instant. Messrs Abraham and E. K. Brown, J.P.’s, were on the Bench. Nothing else was done. The Supreme Court will op-»n in Gisborne for the second time iu McFarlane’s Hall, on Monday week, the 18th instant. As there is a good list of cases the Court will have plenty of work.

Mr E. Matthews, of Roebuck Road has saddle horses always to let on hire at very reasonable rates.

We must apologise for an error which appeared in our last issue. In the report of the proceedings of the meeting of the Band of Hope Mr Lewis’s name was made use of instead of Mr J. East.

The local manager of the South Pacific Petroleum Company, Mr D. isles, informs us that he has just received word fr »m Sydney by wire to the effect that a cable Has been sent to Sun Francisco for another engine to be purchased, and shipped by the Zealandiu which he exp cted to leave that place for New Zealand on or about die 30th of July. The engine in ques’ion is required to replace the one which is at present useless, and which |is evidently unfit for the work. This delay is very unfo lunate for the Company, as it embodies and takes up much valuable time, and ia m every wav an immense drawback.
