Poverty Bay Standard. PUBLISHED EVERY TUESDAY, THURSDAY AND SATURDAY MORNINGS. GISBORNE: THURSDAY, JUNE 7, 1883.

On the 21st of April last, owing to unavoidable circumstances, the late proprietors of the Standard were reluctantly compelled to suspend its publication. At that period there was no likelihood of again resuming its issue until some considerable lapse of time, but, unexpectedly, we found a heus ex machina. Immediately on the suspension of the paper very numerous expressions of regret reached us, which were quickly followed by pressing and most earnest requests from all quarters, endeavor ing to prevail upon us to resume the publication of the journal. Those who before had been quite indifferent to our existence soon became aware of the absolute necessity that existed for a journal that would give some true expression of public opinion. Even those who had been our open and avowed opponents expressed an earnest desire to see us “ alive again.” At last, the pressure became so great, and the financial atmosphere clearing a little, and being eager, though scarcely ready, for the fray, we have again buckled on our harness, and are ready to do battle against all wrong and oppression beneath the Standard which, we are sanguine enough to believe, will flaunt long and proudly in the favorable breeze of public opinion. The proprietor, Mr Charles H. C Webb, will publish this journal every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday morning, and has placed it under entirely new literary direction. It having been rumored that we have been resuscitated and subsidised by the New Zealand Native Land Settlement Company, we consider it necessary to state that the rumor is entirely false and utterly without any foundation, and that we are bound in no way to any class, party or interest. We shall always aim to be the expositor of public opinion and defender of all public rights, interests and morals. Personal and coarse invective will be carefully excluded from its pages, and though we may differ from some, yet we shall treat all with proper respect, and shall endeavor to correct all errors rede et suaviter. We shall always give ready and willing access to our columns to all who will properly use and not abuse this privilege. We shall at all times identify ourselves with, and give our utmost support to, any matter —public or privaie —that tends to the progress, welfare and prosperity of rhe district. As we shall at all times faithfully study their interests, we hope that the generous public will not be unmindful of ours, and that, as we merit, so we shall receive public support; trusting that our love of virtue may not lead us to exclaim virtue laudatur et al getl
