GISBORNE SCHOOL.

A meeting of the Committee of the Gisborne School was held last night. Present : Messrs. J. W. Nolan (in the chair), Hall, McKay, Hoss. bigley, and F. J. Piesse (secretary). CORRESPONDENCE. After the confirmation of the minutes, the correspondence was read, among the letters being several from the Hawke’s Bay Education Board. With reference to the application of Mr. H. Bull and Miss Mclntosh for increase of salary, the Board replied, agreeing to an increase in both cases, the former to receive £2OO, and the latter £135 per annum. The committee were informed that the Board had appointed Mr. A. Y. Rom, in* spector of works in connection with the erection of the Infant School, the only other applicant being Mr. W. J. Quigley. Mr. Hall enquired the reason of the delay in the commencement of the work. Mr. Rom stated that he had communicated with Mr. Lamb, Architect to the Board, who had replied to the effect that the penalty would be strictly enforced if the building was not completed within the contract time. In reference to the filling of the appoint ments rendered vacant by the resignation of the Misses Browne and Morgan, a communicalion was received from the Board, stating that after considering the letter received from the Gisborne Committee (in which it was insisted upon that a certificated master should be appointed instead of a mistress) they had decided on recommending the appointment of a mistress and an assistant pupil teacher. It was pointed out that by the removal of Miss M Intosh to the Infants’ School, only a female, and she a pupil teacher, would left in the upper department of the school. Being a mixed school, it was necessary that the girls should have someone both in the s hool and play ground whose influence and guidance would constantly be acting for good Mother argument used was that sewing

being a compulsory subject for girls preparing for the standards, the presence of a competent female teacher bocame a necessity. A discussion ensued, in which several of the Committee confessed that they had altered their views on this matter. Mr M‘Kay moyed, and Mr Sigley seconded That the recommendations of the Board be agreed to, and that the usual advertisements be inserted inviting applications for the appointment. Mr A. Y. Ross moved as an amendment, That the Committee adhere to the former resolution, end insist on getting a third master. There being no seconder, the original motion was put and carried. BIBLE READING, In reply to a letter sent by the Rev. J. Pinfold, requesting permission to visit the school for the purpose of giving religious instruction, it was decided that permission be granted on the distinct understanding that such instruction be given after school hours. MID-WINTER VACATION!. It was announced that the midwinter vacation would commence on June 29th, and terminate on July 13th. The half- , yearly examination would be held on July 2nd. HIGH SCHOOL. On the motion by Mr A. Y. Ross, seconded by Mr M. Hall, a committee, consisting of Messrs. D. Johnstone, J. W. Nolan, and H. M'Kay were appointed to wait upon the resident members of the House of Representatives to confer with them re the establishment and endowment of a High School for Cook County. Under the heading of “ Gisborne Gun Depot,” will be seen Mr. E. Burch’s advt. He calls special attention to his stock of guns ; repairs all kinds of sewing machines carefully ; grinds razors, seizors, &c., ; mends umbrellas; sweeps chimneys, &c., &c., &c. He has also a large and varied assortment of fireworks for sale.
