COOK COUNTY COUNCIL.

The ordinary meeting of the above was held on Thursday evening. Present—The Chair* man (Mr W. K. Chambers), Crs. Clark, Gannon, Westrup, and Ferris. The minutes of the last ordinary meeting were read and confirmed. A letter was read from the Colonial Secretary, stating that the Native Rating Districts will be proclaimed as soon as the maps are prepared. Another from Mr Milner was read, sug- ? esting that Mr Lenard should be appointed )og Registrar for Waiaptt, ft was decided that a letter should be written to the officer it charge of the Armed Constabulary, asking that Mr Lenard may be appointed, and that the remuneration be 20 per cent. E. Harper, the Ranger, reported that he had impounded 100 head of cattle at Matawhero, but that owing to the bad state of the fences they had broken out, and he had consequently lost the driving fees. After considerable discussion, on the motion of Cr. Ferris, it was decided that thb sum of £2 10s should berated to the Ranger. A letter was received from Mr Currie, Poundkeepcr at Ormondj complaining of the partiality of the Ranger in impounding cattle. The letter was ordered to be acknowledged without comment, as was also one from Mr Peters, relative to the drain near Kaiteratahi. Mr W. D. Lysnar wrote a letter enclosing a petition that the Upper Patutahi should be made a now road district. It was ordered that the petition be referred to Mr Lysnar for his signature as attesting those of others. It was resolved that Mr Pelham E. Richardson be employed to obtain the signatures of the ratepayers of the Arai district on the question ot special rate, under the Roads and Bridges Constructions Act, for erecting the Karama Bridge, and that a fee of £2 2s be allowed for his services. The Engineer’s report was as follows :— To the Chairman County Council, Sir, —I have the honor to submit the following report for your guidance and information :—Sections 4, 7 and 8 of the GisborneWairoa Road are completed ; section 6 is being proceeded with slowly, Since I was authorised to get a spouting made to carry off the water from pipes at the foot of Kaiteratahi hill, finding that the cost would exceed the limit to which 1 am authorised to go, viz., £5, it has not been undertaken. I would recommend that tenders be called for this work. I would recommend that the following works be undertaken Ist. Bridge at Tolago Bay. It is very necessary that a bridge be constructed, or a work of a temporary nature be undertaken, otherwise the road will be impassable in winter. 2nd. That 12 chains of bridle track be formed between Waitotara and Puatai, and track over slip repaired. 3rd. That a new bridge be constructed on the Wainui Flat, the old one having been carried away ; this is a very necessary work, as travellers are obliged to leave the road and pass through private property. 4th. That a box culvert be constructed and placed along side the present one, on the Gisborne-Wairoa road, the present one being too small to run off the water which has been carried into the drains by your Council and Patutahi Highway Board. 5. That extra pipes or a box culvert be placed alongside the present pipes at the northern side ol the Kaiteratahi hill, the present pipes being insufficient to carry off the water. 6. That a few fascines be laid in holes in the Pipiwhakaa bush. 7. That ten chains of drain be cut between Messrs Williams and Craill’s, Gisborne-Wai-roa road. 8. That a couple of men be employed in mJ;i ig repairs in sections 1,2, 3 ana 5 Gisborne-Wairoa road. I find that in order to curry off the water which lies in the side drain of road near the cemetery, and which overflows, causing damage to cemetery it will be necessary to cut an outlet drain along the boundary of cemetery and recreation reserve, I would ask w'hether I shall proceed with this work, having received instructions at a previous meeting to attend to this matter, when it was deemed necessary to clear out the side drain. A fall for the water could be obtained bj deepening side drain to 7 feet, but as it is in sandy soil and alongside of road, I would not recommend this latter alternative.— Yours, etc., G. J Winter, County Engineer, AU the recommendations made were ap- ; proved of, and ordered to be done. i Messrs Caulton and McLeod waited on the • Council as a deputation from the Ormond • settlers, relative to the conservation of the | river bank. They stated that they had col lectcd £7O, but the Government had refused to contribute anything. They asked the Council to endorse its previous promise of £5O and if possible to make it larger. A discussion ensued during which Cr. Ferris said that there was a gentleman in Ormond who was willing to undertake the work of diverting the course of the river, and who would not ask for payment unless the work proved satisfactory. On the motion of Cr, Ferris, seconded by Cr. Gannon, an additional £2O was granted.

The report of the Inspector of Slaughterhouses was approved. Accounts to the amount of £372 Ils 8d were passed. It was decided that £5OO, to be paid in gravel, should be the sum fixed as the charge against the Borough Council for the use of the rails at present laid.
