WESLEYAN SERVICE.

SUNDAY, Bni April, On Sunday morning, Mr Pinfold preached from St. John, vn ch., 17th ver.; and in the evening he preached an earnest and able sermon to a large and attentive congregation. His text was taken from the 3rd ch., XVI verse of St. John’s Gospel, “ For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believed in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” The preacher, in most forcible language, set forth the immensity of God’s love to poor, sinful, fallen man. The Atheist said there was no God, the Pantheist that everything was God, but that book (the Bible) told ns that there was a God, and how to approach him, viz., through His only begotten Son Jesus Christ, the fact of whose birth, life, and death, history most abundantly proved. Even as God had said to Abraham, “Now I know that thou fcarest God, seeing thou hast not withheld thy Bon, thine only son, from me,” so might we all say to God, “ Now 1 know that Thou lovest me, since Thou hast not withheld Thy Son, Thine only begotten Son, from me.” Through His atonement, though our sins wore as scarlet, yet should they be made whiter than snow. As the dying Israelite, who had been bitten by the fiery serpent, was directed by Moses to look up to the brazen serpent on the cross and live, so we who had been bitten unto death by the serpent sin, had but to look up to Christ on the Cross to be made partakers of the life eternal. The rev. gentleman most earnestly exhorted all his hearers to at onee accept that “ peace which passeth all understanding.” We most sincerely congratulate our Methodist friends on Mr Pinfold’s advent, and trust that all will heartily assist him in the large field for useful labor which Gisborne presents to an earnest worker like Mr Pinfold.

On Thursday evening a meeting will be held in the Wesleyan Church, when the pastoral address of the Conference will be read, and the work, etc., for the ensuing year decided upon. All are earnestly invited to attend.
