Mr, F. W. Wood, who is at present in Gie. borne, is desirous of opening up an industry which is calculated in no sm-ill measure to add to the present prosperity of Poverty Bay. All that this gentleman, who is considerably impressed with the district, wants is the co-operation of the farmers, but only in so far that they will grow wheat. Mr. Wood will supply the mill ; and it seems to us that our bucolic friends will be acting wisely if they determine to aid Mr. Wood by producing wheat so that he may be enabled to produce flour. We know that it has been stated that wheat cannot be successfully grown in Poverty Bay, but we equally well know that assertions such as these are simply ridiculous. Wheat can be grown, and in most profitable quantities, if the the farmer will du something more than m?relg sow the grain. The fact of it is, our soil is so good that our husbandmen are satisfied to lie down and watch the crops growing. There is nu use denying the fact that farming in Poverty

B&y is conducted !n amostlaßy and indolent manner. Let an effort be made, aud let the country people put themselves in communication with Mr Wood. This gentleman possesses capital, is willing to eilter into the speculation and likes the district. All he asks from the settlers is how much wheat can you grow to tne acre ? And how many acres have you got to grow it on ?
