One of our reporters has sent in the following :—“ A Cricketer’s new use for a Church to execute Ireland in a Divorce Suit.” After some consideration we have discovered that the information he intenned to convey was that on our fourth page will be found “A Cricketer’s Divorce Suit,” “Executions in ! Ireland,” and “New Use for a Church.” I Mr D. Page, of the Masonic Hotel, has on ! view in his front bar a magnificent apple, grown by Mr Geo. Williams in Palmerston Road. It is perfect in form, and is 17g I inches in girth. This shows what can be grown in Poverty Bay. Two important decisions were given today in Chambers by Judge O’Brien. In the first the freehold right was ordered to vest in Mr Peter Cooper, tne right being 730 acres in the Okahu Block. Mr Robert Cooper was also successful in having his freehold right established with regard to 512 acres in the Makatikutiku Block. Mr M. Price, who as our readers are aware, has for some time back been suffering from a weakness of the eyes has determined to consult Dr. Schwartzbach at Napier, and left by the steamer last night for this purpose. We hope to hear soon that he has received relief. Mr Booth, the R.M left on Wednesday night last for the West Coast, in order to give evidence in a Native Land case, which is now under consideration, he being an important witdess. We havo to apologise to Mr Peters for an error which crept into our last issue : the near hind wheel of his coach did not come ofi’—the axle broke. Mr B. C. Fryer’s brake will run to-day, to the Waerenga-a-hika racecourse, and as* Nai tive racing is not alone honest, but highly j entertaining, we have no doubt there will be • no lack of passengers. Owing to certain works at the foot of Bright-street, near the Taruheru River the water from two drains have become dammed (as well as -but it’s spelled differently) and the consequence is that a quantity of stagnant water has gathered itself together, and sent forth a stench which so affects the olfactory organs of persons living near that the recording Angel will havo but few tears left with which to blot out the improper expressions so frequently indulged in by those living near. \\ e hope the Borough Engineer will take cognizance of this, and see that some outlet is made for the water. At present it is calculated to came disease ard sickness.
Loughlin O’Brien Esq., Trust Commissioner, yesterday affixed his signature to the deed of Paritu 9916 acres, and Takararoa \ 1474 acres, and as Judge of the Native Land Court, signed orders for freehold tenure, to vest in Charles Ring Esq. This business has been effected through the agency of Mr James Mac Kay. A gentleman who was riding into town yesterday, happened to meet the engine, and his horse taking fright caused him to come to serious grief. Fortunately the 1 ground was soft, ond he received no in jury, | but he most viciously let forth a word of four letters commencing with a big “ D ” much | to the amusement of the laborers on the ' road, ; A cow, owned by Hirini Haereono of Waerenga-a-hika, has given birth to three bull calves, and although such an unusual departure from the ordinary groove is not unprecedented, still it is the first time we have heard of such a thing in Poverty Bay. The calves arc strong and healthy, and it is stated that both mother and family arc doing well. Wc would remind our readers that Messrs Carlaw Smith and Co.’s sale of furniture stock in trade &c., of the Sir George Grey Hotel takes place to-day, at their mart. Mr Samuel Stevenson, after a considerable amount of beating about the bush, has secured the Simonsen Opera Troupe for the four nights they purpose performing here. We hope he will derive a pecuniary benefit by the transaction. The example set by Mr Gillice of Ormond, as to the capabilities of the soil of Poverty Bay for hop growing is one which should be followed. At present Mr Gillice hrs a number of persons engaged in picking the hops, and paying them according to their work. There is one man, we are informed, who can easily earn 15s a day at the work. The enormous advance in the price of hops in the Home market recently and[the]magnii ficent specimens of the vine grown by the I gentleman just alluded to should be concluI sive proof that it can not only be easily prokuced, but also that|the industry would be highly profitable. The Agnes Martin, Captain Nicolas, is announced to leave for Auckland via the East Coast, on Monday next. Messrs Common, •Snelton and Co., are the agents. We are pleased to see that Mr William Proffit, the well-known trainer is getting about again, although still very weak. On Monday, the 19th inst., the “Service of Song ” in aid of the funds of the Presbyterian Church, will be held in the Bruce Hall, Ormond. Mr J. W. Witty has been indefatigable in working up his choir, and the attendance should be a large one. The Clerk of the Assessment Court advertises that a sitting will be held on the 29th inst. for the purpose of hearing objections. j A well-known Wellington correspondent ; says that the retirement of Mr Whitaker ! from the cabnet is very probable. I We {!£. Ji. Herald) hear that the proI perty which Mrs Forster leaves behind her i —some £23,000 —is bequeathed chiefly to j the Church of England. There is a clause j in the will providing that in the expenditure j of the money the welfare of women and • ceildrenmust be primarily considered, but ' the directions are not very explicit.
