Mr J. Shrimpton, our Postmaster, deserves the thanks of the community for hie promptitude in having the mails sorted last evening, although the steamer arrived at about eight o'clock. We have also to acknowledge from him the receipt of “The New Zealand and Australian Postal Time-table for 1883.”
Yesterday afternoon R. Ross was sentenced to one month's imprisonment in the Gisborne Gaol, for debt. This morning there wae only one case, against Wirimu Pahau, who was charged with being drunk in • public place, on the 9th of March. The prisoner pleaded guilty to the charge, and wus fined £2, or, in default of payment, one month’s imprisonment. A bicycle rider in South Australia was recently chased along a road for some dis tance by a bull, but having a slight incline in his favor, he succeeded m distancing his pursuer. Thia shows what speed can be obtained from the “ machine ” even on an ordinary road.
We have to acknowledge the receipt of part three of “ Picturesque New Zealand, and Monthly News.” The number before us has been enlarged, and also registered as a newspaper. In addition to this there has been a change in the proprietorship. The present number is excellently written, and the views all that could be desired. Mr G. F. Henderson, is the Gisborne agent, from whom copies can be obtained.
