LEADING MEN.
TO THZ EDITOR. Sib, —I, and a number of my fellow ratepayers, cordially agree with you that “ the Councillors who made so stupid an agreement (with Common, Shelton and C 0.,) should pay what is to be paid out of their om pockets.” The suggestion is an admirable one, and no less sensible and ttue than another one in the same article, so the effect that a number of men aspire to, and obtain, positions in the council and other places of public trust, for which they are eminently unfitted. I could name some who are Councillors, Hospital committee men, members of
Jockey Clubs, Secretary pf I don't know how many concerns, Ao., Ao., and whose qualifications for any, or either, of the foregoing positions; are simply nil. The mere fact of their aspiring to them only proves the old saying " ignorance tad impudence always go to-gether,” There are a ring of this sort of individuals who monopolise all the public places and direct all the public machinery in the Borough, who are corrupt and dishonest, and whose only aim is to feather their own, and their friends, nests, at the expense of the ratepayers. How long is this to Continue P How long before the Ratepayers throw off their present apathy ? and elect men who will study the ratepayers, and not their own pockets ? In a future letter I will call your readers attention to another feature of thie question. In conclusion I will ask you to give me the names of the Crs. who voted and signed the agreement with C. S. and Co., and, if possible, a copy of the said agreement. lam Ac., Vebite. Gisbome, 10th March, 1883.
