[reuter’s telegrams]. LONDON, March 5. In the House of Commons to-day Mr Gladstone, replying to a question, stated that it was not possible to fix, until after the Easter recess, a date upon which the Debate on the Affirmation in Lieu of Oath Bill could commence, Dr. Thornton, Bishop of Ballarat, speaking at the Mansion House to-day, made an urgent appeal to the British public for support to carry on the work of his diocese. March 6. In reply to a question put to him in the House of Common, to-day, Mr Gladstone stated that the British troops will be withdrawn from Egypt when the purposes for which they were sent there are achieved. He added that it is not possible at the present time to fix a date for the withdrawal.
