A POLICEMAN SOLD.
The following good story is told by tbe Taieri Advocate t —•“ Not a hundred miles from Caversham there resides a policeman who, os the story goes is remarkable for his officiousness and sharpness towards publicans. One Sunday recently he saw a little girl enter a hotel and come out with a billy of what she said was beer. The limb of the law had been on the lookout all the morttiug, and felt that his patience had been well rewarded, and congratulated himself npon having a splendid case. Upon taking the lid of the billy off, though he was somewhat surprised to find nothing but pure water where he anticipated finding beer. The man in blue had been keeping an eye on the hotel, and the wily publican had been keeping two eyes on the peeler ; so, feeling sure that the little girl would be accosted, he had, unknown to her, filled her can with water instead of beer, and then, with some friends, went out to enjoy the joke. The policeman was the only man who couldn’t see where the laugh came in."
