(BY CABLE.—REUTER’S TELEGRAMS). SYDNEY, Feb. 22. Sailed, thia afternoon; P.M.S. City of Sydney, for San Francisco via Auckland. Owing to a squabble in the Legislative Assembly between the Hon. John McElhone, member for the Upper Hunter, and Mr H. Taylor, representative for Mudgee, both gentlemen resigned their seats in the House, and both have announced their determination of contesting the election for the vacant constituency of Mudgee. Seven fresh cases of small pox have occurred on board the steamship Menmuir. All the sufferers are passengers, six being Chinamen, the seventh is a saloon passenger. The European patients have all been removed to the Coast Hospital at Litt'e Bay Quarantine Station. There are several other suspected cases on board the Menmuir, MELBOURNE, Feb. 22. Arrived, this morning : Union Co.’s steamship Rotomahana, from Bluff, The polling for the general elections took place to-day, and up to the present time, 10 p.m., the returns show the following number of candidates have been returned ;—Constitutionalists, 19 ; Ministerialists, 1; Independents, 4 : Liberals, 25 (? 23). The elections have generally passed off quietly, but there is considerable excitement in the city tonight, ond the streets are thronged. Sir Bryan O’Loghlen was present when the result of the polling was announced ; his name was at the bottom of the poll. The returns are as yet incomplete. Among the defeated candidates are—Sir J. O’Shonnassy, Sir Bryan O’Loghlen, Messrs Gaunson, L, L. Smith, and Longmore. The following are among those returned— Messrs Madden, Langridge, Kinin.o, Berry, Francis, Patterson, Service, Pearbon, Miraus and Major Smith. February 23. Returns now to hand regarding the election of members to eighty-four seats in the Assembly ; some, however, are as yet incomplete. The “ Argus,” in its issue this morning, gives the following classification of elected members Ministerialists, 7 ; Constitutionalist*. 37 ; Liberals, 32*; Independent, 8, The “Age ” them as follows . Constitutionalists, 33 ; Liberals, 35 ; Ministerialists, 16. General results, however, indicate balance of power between Constitutionalists and Liberal Parties, and confirms the probability of formation of Coalition Ministry.
