FIRE BRIGADE.

A M2ETING of subscribers to the Steam Fire Eng.ne was held last night, in the Club Room of the Masonic Hotel. The following gendemen were present : —Dr Pollen, Messrs G' nnon, Dickson, Boylan, J. Bourke, Croll, Eryer, Cox, Adair, Murchie, Townley, D. Johnston, Humphreys, Good, and A. Graham, The latter gentleman was voted to the Chair.

The Chairman said the object of the meeting was to take the voice of the subscribers as to whether the Steam Engine and appliances were to be handed over to the Borough Council or not. He read the following letter rom the Town Clerk on the subject Messrs Graham, Adair, and Boylan, Trustees of the late Fire Brigade. Feb. 16.

Gentlemen,—l am directed by the Borough Council to write you in reference to the late Volunteer Fire Brigade. The Council are anxious to know whether, in the event of their being willing to assist in the formation of a new Brigade, you, as trustees, are willing to hand over to the Council the Fire Engine and all property in connection thereto? Unless this is ascertained the Council are unable to move in the matter, and as it is important that some steps should be taken without delay, I should be much obliged for an early reply.—Your obedient servant, J. Bourke, Town Clerk. Mr Bourke said the Borough Council wished to know if the subscribers would hand over to them the steam engine or not, before making a definite offer. Dr Pollen proposed—“ That this meeting hand over the fire engine and all appurtenances to the Borough Council.” Seconded by Mr D. Johnston jun, Mr Boylan said he supposed the Borough Council would pay all debts in connection with the Brigaae. The Chairman asked what the liabilities of the Brigade were. Mr Dickson said Mr Stevenson had a statement of all liabilities. There being no amendment to Dr Pollen’s motion, it was put to the meeting, and carried on the voices. i Mr Bourke suggested that the Borough I Council be supplied with assets and liai bilities. A general conversation ensued, and several suggestions as to the formation of a new Brigade, were offered ; but it was finally decided by the meeting to leave the whole matter in the hands of the Borough Council. The Chairman said a letter should be written to the Borough Council in reply to the one received embodying the resolution fiassed, and also a statement of assets and iabilities. The usual vote of thanks closed the meeting.
