[PBB VNITKD PH.EBB ASSOCIATION]. GREYMOUTH, This Day. The afternoon train on Saturday from Brunner to Grey, consisting of about 16 coal trucks, break van, and three passenger carriages, met with a serious accident crossing the Motumotu Bridge. Some of the coal wagons got off the track about 50 yards before reaching the bridge. The engine and eight wagons and the passenger cars remained on the line. The other wagons jumped from sleeper to sleeper, cutting some in two, and a great many axles, boxes, and springs were broken, and about 90 feet of line completely stripped of sleepers, and the rails twisted and broken. The train was stopped before the passenger got on the bridge. AUCKLAND. This Day. Archibald Forbes finished lecturing here, and goes to Taranaki and Wanganui, and will then spend a fortnight in Christchurch. Dr. Philson has donated the purse of £270 recently presented to him to create a nucleus of a medical library for the use of medical students at the District Hospital. TIMARU. This Day. A young man named Mahon was drowned yesterday afternoon while bathing in Salt Water Creek, near Timaru. The body has not yet been recovered. DUNEDIN. This Day. A young man who was bathing at the ocean beach yesterday morning, was drowned and his body was carried out to sea. His companion got out with much difficulty. A clerk in the New Zealand Insurance Company, named Winter was arrested on Saturday night for embezzlement. He had been employed some time in the office at a salary of over £2OO a year, and is believed to have escaped detection for some time by falsifying his books. WESTPORT, This Day. Sailed—The barque Celestia, for Noumea, New Caledonia. She takes coal for the French Messageries line of steamers, and if the shipment is approved of a regular trade will probably be opened. CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. About £3OO worth of watches and jewellery were seized by the Customs in the house of a recent arrival from London by the Firth of Forth, named Lover, the property having been smuggled ashore. The game will be resumed on Monday. MERCURY BAY, This Day. The Timber Company’s balance - sheet shows a profit for the year of £5794. A dividend equal to 12A per cent, has been declared. James Fultonf aged 16, was drowned at Waikato River, near Tuakau, on Saturday. WANGANUI, This Day. A man named Denis Donovan disappeared mysteriously yesterday morning. On Saturday night he went to hfs hotel, at 1 o’clock he went out of the bed-room undressed, and has not been seen sinca. He has been in a despondent state for some time; and it is believed he committed suicide by drowning himself in the river.
