The J Hnttciy’s big gun prize firing is now taking place. The target is almost in a direct line with Peel-street, thus affording spectators an excellent opportunity of seeing the result of the various shots.

From an announcement in another column we see that the Reverend Father Luck will celebrate mass at the Catholic Church tomorrow, at JI o'clock. The reverend gentleman has travelled overland from Auckland and we trust that his stay in Gisborne will be of some duration. The members of this Church have been deprived of a pastor since tho departure of the Rev. Father Vaggioli. No doubt there will be a large congregation to-morrow to welcome the new clergyman. The advertisement of Messrs A. Graham & Co., appears elsewhere, giving a list of beers, spirits, wines, etc., which have arrived and are to arrive. A perusal of the advertisement will show that the firm is determined to come to the front.

Yesterday afternoon a young lad named Hansen, succeeded in hooking a splendid yellow-tail at the Taruheru Bridge, The noy was unable to land the monster fish himself, but with the assistance of threw men he succeeded in bringing his fish to the bank. The fish in question weighed about 301b5., and P. Blueet, the enterprising fishman of the Bay, was busily engaged to-day in disposing of it in small quantities.

We learn from good authority that the Union Company's Tarawera has all her berths engaged for the proposed excursion trip to the Weet Coast. Every available cabin in the saloon has been engaged, and the second cabin and steerage are also full. The trip is likely to prove a most successful one from a monetary point of view.

A gentleman advertises in the “ Westport Times,” of the 26th January last, to the following effect: —“ P. J. Bruen, 8.A., T.C.D., M.R.C.5.1., L.M.” He further states that he “may be consulted at his residence Russell street, or at Mr Richardson’s Chemist, Palmerston Road.” What on earth does it all mean ? It reminds one somewhat of the celebrated “ Abracadabra” of the Rev. Thomas Ingoldsbly. The “Thames Advertiser” says: The “Bay of Plenty Times” is again in a transition state. Mr Edgcumbe is no longer the proprietor, a certain bank and Mr G. V’. Stewart having put a gentleman in possession in their joint interests. We understand that Messrs Browne, Bros., of the “ Tauranga Guardian,” will probably tu.ke over the “ Bay of Plenty Tinies,” Mr G. V. Stewart and Mr J. Oakley Browne, the editor and part proprietor of the “Guardian,” having come through yesterday, en route to Auckland, to make the necessary arrangements for the amalgamation of the two papers. Professor Allen had a very large number of patients tn visit him last night, at the Albion Club Hotel. During the time that Mr Al’en has been in Gisborne he has not only met with many friends, but a very large number of patients who have availed themselves of his healing powers. The Professor leaves to-day, for Napier, and it is probable that he will commence a tour of the Southern Provinces, returning to Gisborne on liis way to his residence at Auckland as soon as possible. We wish the Professor every success, and trn<t that his tour may be a su<- r-j-sfnl one.

A bachelor too old to get married, yet too susceptible to let the giris alone, was riding with a lady the other day, and accidentally dropped an arm round her waist. No objection was made fora while, and the arm granually relieved the side of tho carriage of the pressure upon it. But of a sudden the lady started with volcanic energy, and, with a flashig eye, exclaimed : “ Mr 8., I can sup port mys- lf “ Capitsl !’, was the instant reply ; “ yon are just the girl I have been looking for these five years. Will you marry me ?” On Tuesday next Messrs Graham, Pitt, and Bennett will sell at noon, fifteen tons of Oamaru flour ; and on the day, at 2 o’clock, 20 two-tooth Lincoln rams.
