Judge Gillies summed up strongly in favor of the plaintiff, but the jury found the issue in favor of the defendant. A petition is being circulated in Waikato tor the removal of Mr Nortbcroft, R.M. DUNEDIN, This Day. The N.Z. Electric Light Company h av® entered into a contract with the “O/ago Daily Times ” Company to light the “ Ti /hes” office with 60 lamps of 20-candle power each, on the Lane-Fox incandescent princip’r®. The Tarawera is lighted with 150 Edison lights. Mr .James Watney, M.P. for Bast Surrey, is a passenger by her on a tour of the Colony.
WELLINGTON, This Day. The Customs revenue for the Colony for last month was £123,043. Dunedin heading the list with £35,722 ; Auckland, £23,203 ; Wellington, £21,499. The total for the corresponding month last year was £129,926. The beer duty last month was £6,227 ; the corresponding month, 1882, £5468. The number of libraries that have made application for a subsidy is 355; their total income being £22,933 13s lid. A grant of £6OOO affords a subsidy of 5s 2’B-19 in the pound to each library. At the inquest at the Hutt on Baillie, who was killed at the Races, a verdict of Accidental Death was returned, and no blame was imputed to any one. The jockey’s evi. dence was that the mare Express was in the habit of baulking, and did so at Taratahi and Waihenga Races.
