At the inquest on the body of the boy Pearce who was killed on Sunday by being thrown from his horse, a verdict of accidental death was returned. The Proper y Tax receipts amount to £62,000. A cable message has been received by Captain Rose, local manager of the New Zealand Shipping Company, to the effect that the British King, the flrst of the Company’s direct line of steamers, left Gravesend for this port on Friday last. At an inquest yestyday on the bodies of the lad Pearce, killed at Pahautanui by a throw from his horse; and the man McMahon, who has been missing since the 22d inst., the verdicts were in the first case Accidental Death, and in the latter Found Drowned. The Governor was entertained at dinner by the Wellington Club last night. There wer. 70 members present, including th. Bishop of Wellington, Hon Walter Johnston, Major Atkinson, Sir James Prendergast, Hon. John Johnston, and Col. Pearce. A. De B. Brandon, President of Art, presided. The Longhurst case was considered by the Government this morning, and everything is now ready to be submitted for His Excellency’s decision.
AUCKLAND, This Day. At the civil sittings before Justice Gillies, the following divorce cases were heard;— Willcocks v, Willcocks and another. This was a petition of the husband for dissolution of marriage on the grounds of his wife's adultery with the co-respondent, Forder. A verdict was given for co-respondent. Snow, den v. Snowden and another. Application for a rule absolute, which was granted. Lyttle v. Lyttle, this was a petition of the wife for dissolution of marriage on the grounds of her husband’s adultery. A rule nisi was granted. Sixty Natives, who were arrested at Parihaka, have arrived here, and propose to give a performance in the Theatre Royal. The annual meeting of the New Zealand Accident Insurance was held to-day. The directors’ report stated that the Company are extending operations and transacting profitable business. Their operations extend now to all parts of Australasia. The amount of credit to the profit and loss account is now £4557, out of which it is proposed to dividend ut. .he rale at Oa per share, and of which 3d has already been paid for the half-year ending June 30th, The profit and loss account debtor to the amount paid for compensation, £2627 9s Id ; commission, salaries, and general expenses, £4748 6s fid ; contingent liabilities, £1,500 ; re-insurane fund for unexpired risks, £1,000; travelling expense., £950 19s. 3d. ; License fee, N. The annual meeting of Fisher and Company, limited was held to-day. The report of the Directors showed a net profit of £5,483 12s 3d, and recommended a payment of a dividend of 7 per cent, on the paid up capital, which would absorb £2,625. £2,858 to be carried to reserve. NAPIER, This Day. The vital statistics of January show that the births were 28; marriages, 12; deaths, 20. Of the latter, 16 were infants. During the year 1882, patient, in the hospital numbered 305 ; of whom 19 died ; 278 were cured. 701 out door patients were also treated. CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. Yesterday, Mr Bruce, a blacksmith at Rakaia had occasion to discharge one of hi. men for (ome fault, and in revenge apparently the latter waited until the other workmen had gone to dinner, then he struck Mr Bruce on the head several times with a sixteen inch horse rasp. Mr Bruce was rendered quite unconscious and now lies in considerable danger. The police are endeavoring to find the man whose name is Armstrong. DUNEDIN, This Day. The wool shed of the Kaikorai Factory (Ross and Glendinning) was destroyed by fire early this morning. The following are the insurances on the building and stock :— National, £3OOO ; Royal, £lOOO ; New Zealand, £7OOO. The lire at Ross and Glendinning’s broke out at six this morning. The store, which contained a large quantity of wool, was totally destroyed. The loss is considerably above the insurance, as a large supply of wool just taken to the factory was uninsured, the owners being some distance away.
