(BY CABLE.—REUTER’S TELEGRAMS). MELBOURNE, Jan. 30. Up to the present time claims amounting to £94,000 against the Government have been laid by persons who were injured at the Hawthorn Railway accident in December last. The number of writs served is 51 The Ministers have addressed the Governor, and His Excellency has consented to dissolve Parliament. The Ministers have sent a memorandum to the Governor, pointing out that the prospects of being able to transact business in the A ssembly were not encouraging, owing to the evident intention of the Opposition to prevent legislation, without making a direct attack in the Parliament, now in recess, but that it be dissolved on Saturday. The elections will take place on the 22nd of February, and the new Parliament meets on the 27th. Jan. 31. Arrrived—The U.S.S. Co.’s Arawata last evening. It has transpired that Sir Julius Vogel has offered to undertake to float the balance of the loan recently applied for in London. The Government however declined the offer.
Mr. Berry has issued a circular to his supportnr, asking them to meet him to-day, to discuss the political situation. The “ Argus ” has declared that the Government has obtained a dissolution on a sham issue and under false pretences. It asserts that the real cause of the Ministers asking for a dissolution was a certainty that they would have to face the vote of want of confidence after the bungling of the loan, and declares that it is unfair to take the country by surprise. ‘SYDNEY, Jan. 31. The Hon. Ivo Bligh has thrown down the gauntlet, and challenges the best team Australia can produce in a match to take place in Sydney in about three week® time. The English cricketers have gone to Queensland to play several matches in that Colony.
