BLENHEIM, This day. An old settler named William Piper was accidentally killed on Sunday. He was riding along a disused track in the Wairau Valley when his horse bolted and ran against a telegraph post, killing hisriier instantaneously. A verdict of Accidental Death was returned at the inquest. DUNEDIN, This Day. At the City Court-house, Thomas Dobbie was committed for trial on two charges of stealing sewing machines. The information against Mr Proudfoot, tramway proprietor, for causing a nuisance in using engines on the tramway, has been dismissed.

CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. The weather was terifically hot on Saturday, and a case of sunstroke in the harvest field is reported from Prebbleton. At the Magistrate’s Court, this morning, William Leake was committed for trial for an indecent assault on a girl 5A years old. On Friday evening, a fatal accident happened to a farmer named Timothy Cronin, of Southbridge. He was working a young horse in a dray, which was loaded with young blue gums to be used in fencing and on coming down a hillock on the road, the horse began to kick, when the shaking of the poles strangled him, and caused him to bolt. It is thought that the deceased was in the act of getting down off the load to quiet the horse, when he slipped and struck his head against the wheel. An inquest was held, and a verdict was returned of “ accidental death ” with a rider attached “ that had the road been in a proper state of repair, the accident would probably not have happened. ”

WELLINGTON, This Day. The total number of Immigrants that have been nominated since the resumption of Assisted Immigration in August last, is 4,762 souls, or 4,166 adults. The nationalities being English, 1734; Irish, 1814; Scotch, 1067 ; Foreign, 87. The single men number 916, as follows English, 277 ; Irish, 437; Scotch, 185; Foreign, 17. The single women were 1785, being English, 448 ; Irish. 1055 ; Scotch, 263 ; Foreign, 19. The remainder comprise families. The total amount of fees received was, £12,641 10s. Nominations by yesterday’s Mail were 448 souls, or 396 J adults, distributed as follows : —Auckland, 94; Taranaki, 9; Hawke’s Bay, 19; Wellington, 62; Nelson, 24 ; Westland, 5 ; Marlboro', 2 ; Canterbury, 93 ; Otago, 103 ; Southland, 38. Nation, alities were English, 163; Irish, 145; 'Scotch, 133 ; Foreign, 8. The single women numbered 157, of whom 54 were English, 75 Irish, 24 Scotch, and 4 foreigners. The single men were 80, being English, 25 ; Irish, 35, and Scotch, 20. Tne nomination fees received amounted to £1127.
