The Christchurch Telegraph raises a doubt as to the paternity of Canard, the winner of the last Auckland Steeplechase, saying that he is credited to the Auckland Stud Company’s horse Anteros ; but the circumstances of his birth are these :—ln 1876 Gossip visited Anteros on several occasions, and her owner, the late Mr Mallock, not satisfied with the attentions paid her by the imported horse, introduced her to Mangle, a son of Traducer and Flat Iron, and after the interview she grazed contentedly. A nasty accident happened on the Foxton racecourse at their late race meeting. The Manawatu Times stated that as the hack race was being run, and the three leading horses were galloping up the straight a halfdrunken fellow coolly rode across the course. The ridersand crowd called out to him, but he paid no attention. Notice of Motion just got past, but Glorious and Gorse, who were running neck-and-neck a few lengths be. hind, could not be got clear, and Glorious and the horse ridden by the drunken fellow who caused the accident collided. A crack was heard all round, and the two horses fell in a heap, the riders coming off without much damage. Glorious was badly hurt about the near shoulder, but the other horse was killed outright. It is supposed that the crack heard was caused by the breaking of its neck.
