The bank rate to-day was reduced to 4 per ceut., the market rate rate remains at BA. The total reserve of and bullion in the bank of England is £l2, 400,000. The increase being a million since last Thursday. The proportion of the reserve to the liabilities is 4 per cent. The first of the year’s series of Colonial wool auctions opens on February 20. The arrivals to date comprise 110,000 bales. The total probable quantity to be offered, including the quantity left over from last sales, is 270,000 bales. The quantity of arrivals to be included in sales has been lestricted by the Importers’ Committee to 250,000. There are no changes to report in New Zealand securities, or Colonial breadstuffs or tallow. The news to hand from Cannes is that Mr Gladstone is daily improving in health, and is now no longer troubled with sleeplessness. Healy and Davitt, who were yesterday required to find bail for their good behaviour, or to be imprisoned for six months, have failed to find the necessary sureties, and they hr.ve consequently to undergo the imprisonment. The Prince of Wales has left England on a visit to Cannes, in the South of France. January 26. The death is announced of Herr Von Flotow, the German musician, aged 71. For Australian hides there is at present only a limited demand. Prices Is 8d to la 4d lower. A terrific gale has been experienced in the norhern and western districts of England, and has done an immense amount of harm both on land and at sea. The havoc in some places has been most disastrous. There are many shipwrecks reported on the coast. PARIS, Jan. 25. The Committee appointed by the Chamber of Deputies to consider a bill introduced by the Government, dealing with the Bonapartist manifesto, has decided that a measure should provide that all Bonapartists should be cashiered from the army, and expelled from the country. The Government, however, dissents from the finding of the Committee. January 26. Duclerc, President of the Council of Ministers is seriously indisposed. VIENNA, Jan, 25. Giers, the Russian Minister of Foreign Affairs, who is now residing at Vienna, has been publicly feted, and accorded a grand reception.
