AUCKLAND, This Day, At the Criminal Sessions Court on Saturday Albert Long, charged with having attempted to murder his father, received 7 years, and for attempted suicide imprisonment till the rising of the Court. In the case of James Crowley, the Jury, after being out four hours brought in a verdict at 9 p.m. of guilty of murder while in an unsound state of mind, but not amounting to legal insanity. He was sentenced to death. J. T. Smith, landlord of the Exchange Hotel, stabbed himself in the throat on Saturday night with a pen-knife. The injuries are not very serious.
A settler named Archibald Douglas alleges that he has discovered diamonds near Auckland. He is in possession of some thirty stones possessing all the outward characteristics of diamonds, and which withstand the sulphuric acid test.
The Hamilton murder case was commenced at the Supreme Court to day. Messrs Hesketh and Williamson, Crown Prosecuhirs, prosecuting, and Messrs White and Earl appeared for Priestly, and Mr Cooper for Mrs Hamilton. The Court was crammed to suffocation, many of the jurymen were challenged. The defences of the prisoners will bo separate. The evidence, so far. is the same as that adduced at the police court.
