Mr D. Page’s billiard-room bar will be opened this evening, under the control of a most attractive Hebe. The bar and the fittings represent taste, whilst the young lady is—well interview her and you will know all that we desire to tell you. An important question, affecting the interest of those creditors who have debtors residing out of this district, was raised by Mr Cotter, in the R.M. Court, Auckland. The plaintiff had recovered a judgment against a person resident in Blenheim for £B, and issued a judgment debtor summons calling upon the defendant to show cause why he should not be ordered to pay the amount, or in default to be imprisoned. The defendant did not appear, and the R.M. decided that although It was a great hardship, yet he felt bound by the judgment of the (supreme Court in a similar matter (Culling Bremner, 2 New Zealand Jur., W.S., S.C., 206), and could not make any order unless the travelling expenses of the defendant had been paid or tendered to him. Creditors will, therefore, be compelled to pay for the pleasure of their debtor’s presence, or carry their proceedings into the Court where the debtors reside. Townships throughout New Zealand are apparently complaining as bitterly as we do. The “N.Z. Herald ” correspondent at Alexandra, writing on the 12th inst., says “ There is nothing whatever doing, here just now. I never knew the township duller. The school pienic took place on Wednesday last, but from ill-health I was unable to attend it. It took place at the Grove, Puniu. There were some eighty children present. The affair was n great success. The Alexandra band attended, and the usual sports on such occasions were indulged in.
