[PBR UNITED PttESB ASSOCIATION], WELLINGTON, This day. His Worship the Mayor, accompanied by the City Councillors and a number of citizens, proceeded to Government House this afternoon for the purpose of presenting an address to His Excellency, the Administrator of the Government. The deputation was courteously received by Sir James Prendergast. The Mayor made a few remarks explaining the object of the visit, and the Town Clerk read the following address “To His Excellency Sir James Prendergast, Administrator of the Government of New Zealand, &c. : We, the Mayor, Councillors, and citizens of Wellington desire, on the occasion of your resigning the reins of Government into the hands of His Excellency, Sir W. Jervois, to convey to your Excellency our deep sense of the appreciation of the manner in which you have fulfilled the high and important duties of administration of the Government. The expressions of people at all public assemblies held during your term of office prove clearly that you are held in the respect and esteem of all classes of the community, not only in your official capacity, but as dispenser of a warm-hearted and general hospitality. We earnestly trust that the blessing of health and happiness may attend your Excellency and Lady Prendergast, and that you may be long spared to live in the respectful regard of the citizens of Wellington.—Given unaer the Common Seal of the Borough of the city of Wellington, this 18th day of January, 1883, Geo. Fisher, Mayor.

His Excellency replied as follows :—To the Mayor and Councillors of the City of Wellington, I am deeply sensible of the honour conferred upon me by the Corporation of Wellington, and am extremely gratified at receiving such a mark of esteem from the Municipal representatives of the inhabitants of the city in which I have resided, not only while performing the duties of administrator of the Government, but so long previously. However much I have desired to perform the duties devolving upon me in a manner adequate to their importance, I am conscious that the favourable opinions expressed by you as to my conduct is due, rather to the considerate allo./ance which I recognise as having been always accorded to me, than to any success on my part in attaining my desire. I thank you sincerely for the good wishes you have so kindly expressed for the welfare of myself and Lady Prendergast. .1 mao named Casey, who met with an ac-

His Worship strongly commented in the former case as regarded the manner in which the plaintiff had got rid of his money, and said the matter merited further consideration. He thought the Licensing Bench should look into the matter at the next sitting. AUCKLAND, This Day. Fears are now entertained for the safety of the three masted schooner Red Coat, reported as overdue at Levuka recently. A life buoy mark’d Taviona, Auckland, was found near the Fly River, New Guinea, and it is thought th.s may have belonged to the Red Coat, us both that schooner and the Taviona belong to the same firm. Upon the arrival of the surveying schooner Lark this morning, it was stated that a sunken vessel was observed in that vicinity during her cruise, it is therefore feared that the Red Coat’s crew may have been set upon by natives, and the vessel plundered '*nd »unk. After leaving Auckland the Red Coat changed nearly the whole of her crew, while Captain Waite, who tcok her home, died shor’ly after reaching the Islands, so that it is most probable that the vessel was wholly manned by Islanders. At the Criminal Session Joseph Wallace, charged with attempted suicide, was dis charged on his recognisance to c«»me up for sent.en< e when called on.
