The body of a man named John Dale, waa found in the Mataura River to-day. Deceased, who had been drinking, for some time, waa in receipt of remittances from home. The body bore marks of violence, which the doctor thinks were inflicted before death. TIMARU, This Day. The heat yesterday morning and afternoon was most intense, the thermometet at one time registered 150 degrees in the sun. Sev- ■ eral cases of sunstroke are reported, one being fatal. In one case a man named Sullivan belonging to Oamaru, was stricken down in a harvest field at Makibikihi, and was brought into town by train, and conveyed to the hospital where he now lies in an unconscious state. In the second cate a young man named David Hutchinson, working in a field at Eike flat waa struck down and died in a few minutes. A number of milder eases are also reported. A young lady of 12 stripped and tried to save her, but nearly lost her own life. CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. Chas. H. Nelson, master of the American barque Mount Lebanon, waa fined £2O and costs yesterday, for harboring deserters from two vessels in port. The mate, it appears, took them on board without the Captains knowledge, but one man stated that he spoke to Nelson himself, who promised to give him a pissage to Newcastle. DUNEDIN, This Day. At the Supreme Court Wm. Foreehaw, who yesterday pleaded guilty to two indictments for stealing sewing machines, was sentenced to six months'lmprisonment for each offence (concurrent). It is stated the prisoner was one of a gang of men who, by misrepresentation, got possession of machines let out on hire, and against whom proceedings would be taken. WANGANUI, This day. A little boy, named John Brogan, 8 years old, while fishing off tha-rocks by the side of the river, fell into 30 feet of watet, and was drowned. AUCKLAND, This Day. The Union Sash and Door Company's annual balance sheet shows a profit of £3B, 313 which with the balance leaves £35,30 available for a dividend. The dividend is equal to 20 per cent, per annum payable on February Ist.
