(BY CABLE.—REUTER’S TELEOBAMS). SYDNEY, Jan. 17. The N.S.W. Parliament was opened to-day by His Excellency the Governor. The Speech from the Throne commenced by offering congratulations upon the flourishing state of the finances of the Colony at the present time, and stated that the revenue as shown by the recently published returns continued to increase steadily, the total receipts for the last year having exceeded the estimate made by the Colonial Treasurer in his budget speech on Nov. Ist last, by £250,000. The speech, however, intimated that a large portion if not the whole of this sum would be required to cover appropriations for the various public services. In the speech it was then announced that it was Ssed to hold but a short session, and by ting the business to be dealt with to finaneialand certain questions of an urgent nature. Among the measures which would be introduced were bills amending the Criminal Law ; for the creation and issue of Inscribed Stock at the option of the bondholders ; for an amendment to the Licensing Act ; the establishment of High Schools in the Colony ; and to provide means for the abatement of the Rabbit Pest. The consideration of the question of Land Reform would be postponed until next session, when comprehensive measures would be introduced. The speech concluded by remarking upon the continued prosperity of the Colony, and its excellent prospects. The Address in Reply to the speech from the Throne has been affirmed in both Houses of the Legislature without a division. MELBOURNE, Jan. 17. Wheat: shipping firmer at 4s 9d ; barley, malting, strong at 4s 6d, advance of 3d upon last weeks price; New Zealand oats are firm at 3s 3d to 3s 8d for feeding, and 3s 9d to 4s for milling qualities. At their wool auction to-day, Messrs Goldsborough and Co. (Limited), sold 1500 bales, full prices were realised; greasy wools, brought up to 12J, and scoured to 2HMELBOURNE, This day. Sir Thoe. Mcllwraith, the Premier of Queensland, is now here, and it is expected he will discuss certrin questions of common interest with Sir Bryan O'Loghlan and Mr Gray, Premier of South Australia.
