We do not hold ourselves responsible for the opinions expressed by our correspondents.

TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —As my name has been mentioned by your correspondent “ Tika,” in your issue of yesterday, and as he has asked a question of the Directors of the Cross, I will, with ycur permission, make a few remarks. lam not as a rule given to egotism, but I may say that I think “Tika” is perfectly just m his remarks, the real credit for resuscitating the oil industry is due to those who conceived the idea of sending samples to the Sydney Exhibition, and finding the money to pay Mr Ross’s expenses over there that he might press the importance of the industry on the Sydney capitalists. The founder of the Cross Company I take to be Major Ropata, he was anxious to get the oil worked for the sake of his people, and it mattered little to him who the promoters or the means employed ; those of the Gisborne people who took shares, with a 6ona fide intention of helping forward the industry, and have retained those shares to the present time, regardless of all reports, are the people who have really supported the industry properly. As a Director of the Cross Company I am not aware that the very existence of the Company has depended on Mr Clarke even once ; most of the directors have disinterestedly worked as hard as Mr Clarke, and given as much time to the Company’s affairs as he has.—l am, &c., J. H. Stubbs.
