BOROUGH COUNCIL.

Present —His Worship the Mayor, Crs. Somervell, C. Smith, W. Clarke, Whinray, Townley, Lewis, and Clayton. Cr. Tucker arrived'just a few minutes too late. A special meeting of the Borough Council was held last evening for the purpose of receiving applications for an office boy to assist the Town Clerk, at the rate of 15s. per week. The minute of the Council calling the special meeting was read. Applications. There were four applications, viz., E. Skeat. F. Steele, A. Ross, and Finlay Drummond. Cr. Somervell moved, and Cr. Smith seconded, a motion to the effect that the services of Andrew Ross be retained.

Councillor Clayton moved that F. SUelt be appointed, but as there wri no seconder, Cr. Somervell’s motion was carried; the Towp Clerk, Mr J? vhe, having given Roas u excellent chameter. Crs. Whinray and Smith thought that it was only right that the Council should be guided by the opinion of the Town Clerk in this matter, as he was the one best qualified to judge of the boy’s capabilities seeing that he had been working in the Town Clerk’s office for some time. Some of the Councillors desired to go on with some other business, but M it was not on the notion paper for the special meeting. His Worship, the Mayor, rulod that it could not be considered. The maetiiig then adjourned.
