Owing to the horse having met with an accident, Wilberforce has been scratched for all engagements at the ensuing meeting of the Wellington Racing Club, By the casting vote of the Chairman last night, the Mayor’s salary was increased from £2OO to £3OO. A writ for £3OO was served on Captain Mosey of the barque Mercia this morning, at the instance of Messrs. AUCKLAND, This Day. In Chambers, yesterday, at the trial of the divorce case, C. O. Montrose and Baker, corespondent, there was no appearance on the part of respondent or Baker. The trial was fixed for the next sitting. THAMES, This Day. At the Police Court yesterday an old man named Molton was charged |with being the father of a child by his own daughter. The case wasjmost revolting in details. The defendant’s wife gave evidence, against him, but the case wasjlismissed for want of sufficient confirmatory evidence, DUNEDIN, This Day. A mason’s laborer named Aitken fell yesterday about 18 inches [««•], and was picked up dead, having broken his neck. He leaves a wife and seven children. The Masseys were admitted to bail. A peculiar larceny case was heard at the City Court. Edward Gilbert was charged with stealing a quantity of silk. Mrs Russell, the prosecutrix, whose house was burnt down on Monday. It is alleged that she gave the silk to Gilbert to mind. Accused had been led into the affair by one of the witnesses, and was sentenced to three months imprisonment. On leaviug the dock Gilbert told this witness he had better clear out of the country before he came out. A twelve-roomed house in Manor Place, owned and occupied by Captain Stewart, was completely gutted this morning. It was Uninsured. Only Mrs Massey was bailed last nigt, but it is expected that Massey will be released to-day, CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. Applications for the frozen meat space in the British King exceeds double the space available.
