SYDNEY, Jan. 2. Arrived—The steamship Ringarooma from Auckland.
Tattersail’s Cup„ yesterday, was won by Morpeth, after a grand race. The inquest at Clarence on the bodies of those drowned by the wreck of the New England, was concluded. The jury censured the pilot at the Heads .for neglect of duty in not rendering assistance to the steamer. MELBOURNE,,Jan. 2. The Cricket Match between the Hon. Ivo Bligh’s Eleven and the Australian Team was resumed to-day, when the Englishmen continued their second innings, which closed for a total of 169. The following are the scores :—Tylecote b. 38 ; Barlow b, 28 ; C. T, Studd, 21 ; Bligh b, 3; Steele 1 b w, 29 ; Leslie b, 4 ; Read b, 29 : G. B. Studd c, 0 ; Bates e, 11; Verno i 1 b w, 3 ; Barnes not out, 2; Extras 11—total 169. The Australians, requiring 56 runs to win, then commenced their second innings. Massie went in first, and was caught and bowled for nil. Murdoch scored 33, and Bannerman
25 (both not out), Australia thus won th« match by nine wickets, The attendance was enormous, great interest being taken in the contest. Intense excitement prevailed towards the close of the game, The Australian bowling was extremely good, and was dead on the wicket. The ground was in much better order than on the day previous. The return match will be played here on the 19th inst. The following is the analysis of the Australian bowlinu in the match versus English Eleven to-day—Palmer, 3 wickets for 63 runs; Spofforth, 3 for 65; Giffen, 4 for 38. Another Traveller “ North.” This day. The proprietor of one of the Totalisators on the Champion Race has absconded. Two thousand pounds are owing the winners. The Police decline to interfere in the matter. Melbourne papers agree that the Englishmen’s display of cricket in the recent match was disappointing, and express the opinion that the team was beaten on its merits. Fifty thousand persons paid for'admission during the three days’ play. The Mauritius advices, dated 14th Dee. to hand per steamship Natal, report that the weather was favorable to planters, but that labor was scarce. The sugar market was active, and a large business was doing for Australia at former prices, which were maintained. The freight market had declined.
