The Manager reports that advices from Mr Hilton, dated 29th ult,, reached him to-day, 2nd Jan., in which he states that the depth attained during the past fortnight was 22ft. Bin. The 200 feet, desired by the Board of Directors to close the account of the former contractor, would be completed on or about this day. In the last few feet the underlie of strata has changed from S.W. to N.W. More ground would have been sunk, but he had to allow the ground to settle compactly behind the slabs on account of its tendency to run, and he had to put in short setts to secure sinking. The holidays have broken up the regular shifts. Water is now coming in at from 20 to 30 gallons per hour. Oil is •hewing all the way. but the repld work does not allow it to collect. Gas does not cause any inconvenience.
