A serious collision has occurred on the Forth to Clyde Canal, at Nethercroy Bay, Auchenstarry, near Glasgow, between the steamer Ellen Crawford, of Coatbridge, and a steamer from Leith, which was proceeding westward to Glasgow. The former vessel which was loaded with pig iron, was in charge of three men—the captain, mate and the engineer. It sank so suddenly after the accident that only the mate escaped, and this he accomplished by swimming ashore. The captain of the vessel, James Somerville, resided at Calderbank, and the engineer, a young man named Cox, resided at Coatbridge. After the first shock of the collision, the vessel was observed to rise to the surface, and the captain was then clinging to the helm. A rope was at once thrown to him, but before he grasped it the vessel sank. Both bodies were afterwards recovered.
