SOUTHERN CROSS PELROLEUM COMPANY.
Mr Hilton, Engineer reports from Rotokautuku, under date of the 15th instant : Sinking was resumed on the 11th, since which, total depth sunk is 19 feet. The ground is of a crumbling nature, and necessitates quick slabbing. Since sinking very little oil or ebullition of gas, is experiencea, no doubt owing to the ground being taken out expeditiously. The bottom of shaft quiet, little water, taste saline. Strata previous to re-sinking was nearly flat, dip slightly N.E. During progress black pupa veins appeared, and the “lay” altered to a dip to S.W., inclination 15 degrees. This alteration makes no difference in the bottom regarding oil or gas. All the machinery is in good working order.
