Poverty Bay Standard. Published Every Evening. GISBORNE: SATURDAY, DECEMBER 16, 1882.

We welcome to our midst Mr W. J. Witty, who has commenced business at the comer of Childers and Peel streets, and Licensed Government Broker under the Land Transfer Act, and as Land and General Commission Agent. This gentleman who is well known and highly appreciated, both in Gisborne and Wairoa, as a sterling business man, and having acted as Assessor of the Property Tax in the latter district is evidently an expert in the land business. We are sure he will receive a fair share of support. The Canterbury Anniversary being to-day all business is suspended. The weather is beautiful. At 3.30 this morning Cashel House was found to be on fire. The brigade succeeded in extinguishing it before it got a good hold. The downstairs portion was occupied by Craig and Smyth, retail drapers; and the upstairs by Ross and Glendinning, wholesale drapers, of Dunedin. Both stocks much damaged. Craig and Smyth are insured for £3OOO in the New Zealand, and £2OOO in the Standard, and £lOOO in the Guardian. Ross and Glendinning, £2500 in the National, £lOOO in the Liverpool. The fire is believed to have been accidental. Mr Chas. Clarke, the well-known auctioneer of Christchurch, landed at Gisborne yesterday, on his way from Auckland.

A meeting of gentlemen who purpose getting up a Christy Minstrel performance for New Year’s night, was held at the Argy 1 ! Hotel last evening. All preliminaries were discussed and an excellent programme drawup. Amongst those who are going to take part, there are some excellent voices, and some really clever comedians. Another meeting will be held on Monday evening, after which active rehearsal will be commenced.

There were no case, for hearing at the Resident Magistrate’s Court this morning. We are glad to see that Messrs Graham, Pitt and Bennett have set a good example in having water thrown on the footpath in front of their premises. We wish other Gisborne people would go and do likewise.

Mr J. R. Morgan, by advertisement convenes a meeting of creditors in the estate of Forbes and Skeet, to be held at his office at Read’s Quay, on Monday the 18th instant, at 7.30 p.m., for the purpose of finally winding-up the estate.

The Queen has been pleased to approve of a medal being granted to all the officers, non-commissioned officers, and men of Her Majesty’s ferces employe! in the recent operations in Egypt. Her Majesty has also approved of an issue of a clasp, inscribed “ Tel-el-Kebir,” to those troops who took part in the night march from Kassassin, ended by the assault on the entrenchments at Tel-el-Kebir on the morning of the 13th of September. The medal will be granted only to those serving from the 16th of July to the 13th of September this year. For the extraordinary vacancy for the two councillorships in the Borough of Gisborne, rendered necessary to be filled up by the retirement of Mr C. D. Berry, and Mr E. K. Brown, who has been elected Mayor, there are three candidates, namely Messrs R. Hill Fisher, Carlaw Smith, and John Somervell. The nominations are made and the poll will take place at the Town Clerks Office on Friday next, the 29th inat., between the hours of 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. A church officer is wanted for St. Andrew’s. Applications are to be made to Mr W. Teat, who will give full particulars to intending applicants.

A Mexican paper reports that an aerolite fell near Pinos Altos, crushing several large trees, and that a Mexican who saw it, reported that a piece of the moon had fallen.

The Derby will be run for in 1883, on the 23rd May. Ascot meeting will commence on the Sth of June ; and (Goodwood on the 31st July. The Two Thousand Guineas will be run on April 26th. A select dance (by special request) is advertised to take place at the Makaraka Hall on Thursday evening next, when Mr J. T. Crawford will preside at the piano. There will no doubt be a large number present. There was a slight shock of earthquake felt this afternoon. The bidding for the green oats at Messrs Graham, Pitt and Bennett’s sale only reached 10 shillings per acre. 49 cases of oranges averaged 13s 6d. The Maritzburg “Daily News correspon dent says that it is reported there on good authority that Cetewayo will not go up into Zululand for some months. He is said to be much depressed at this cruel delay. A man has only just died in America who was wounded in four battles of the Civil M ar. On the last occasion, at Gettysburg, he received eleven balls through the lungs, body, and spine. Both legs were paralysed, and one arm partially; yet he lived on for 20 years.
