PANIC IN A THEATRE.
A very exciting incident occurred at the R,oyal Opera House, Berlin, shortly before the commencement of the performance of “ Tannhauser. ” Since the catastrophe at the Ring Theatre, Vienna, the stage of the Opera House has bebn divided, ftom the auditorium by a new iron curtain. Suddenly the whole of this arrangement fell with a fearful crash amongst the footlights. The audience at once rushed to the doors panic stricken, and in a few minutes the house was cleared. Although a good many people were severely crushed, there was fortunately no life lost, a fact which is due to the admirable way in which the police did their duty. The cause of the accident, it was afterwards ascertained, was the snapping of the chain by which the iron diirtairi was elevated and suspended. ____________
