OUR NEW GOVERNOR.

In writing of the rumour of Sir William ' Jervois’ promotion from Adelaide, the leading paper in South Australia, the S. A. Register, says in a leading article “ The manner in which Sir William Jervois his not only manifested an interest in colonial matters, but in which he has also thoroughly identified himself with them has aided both his popularity and his usefulness. He has not been content to be a merely idle official spectator of what was going on, but he has always been ready to use his varied stores of experience for the general welfare. Occasionally, perhaps, His Excellency's utterances have aroused a measure of resentment in the minds of a few, but it is only fair to say that this has arisen chiefly from the soundness and accuracy of his criticisms. Remembering that the profession of which his Excellency is a member calls for action more than for words, remembering, too, how galling it is for an intellegent observer of passing events to feel that he is restrained oy his official position from expressing his opinions too freely, it is greatly to the credit of Sir William Jervois that he has for the moat part succeeded in keeping the happy mean. In his official and social relations the Governor has always been mindful of the responsibilities of his position, and it is much to be regretted that the exigencies of the service will shortly necessitate his removal from a position which he has filled with credit to himself, and with manifest advantage to the colony.
