GOVERNMENT LAND SALE.

, Mr. D. A. Tolk, Commissioner of Crown ; Lands for the Provincial District of Auckland, offered at auction to-day in McFarI lane's Hall several blocks of land situate in ! Cook County, and for some of which there was keen competition. The Commissioner acted personally as autioneer, and succeeded admirably, ge.tting through his task without delay. The first lot submitted was Mangaorongo Block, being Section 1, Block IV., Mangatu Survey District, and Section 1, Block I, Waingaromia Survey District, containing 942 acres. Upset price, 78 6d per acre. Description of land : Pastoral land, third class, covered with fern and scrub, a small quantity of timber. ; M? W. Muir became the purchaser, the ' total amount being £353 ss. j The next batch offered were situate on the ! Patutahi Survey District, Sections 97 and 09, containing 1900 and 997 acres, were sold to , H, H. Wall, of Napier, for £748 and £530 respectively. Lot 98 was secured by D. ; McKay at £760, the area being 993. Lot i 1 00 was purchased by Mr J. Tutchen, at the I upset price £4Ol for 1002 acres. Mr D. Dobie bought lots 120 and 121, eonttdning I respectively 2632 acres and 1206 acres, at the I upset price, £1316 and £603. i These lands are situated about 15 miles j from Gisborne, on the formed main road to Wairoa, and on that leading to the Hangaroa village site. The surface soil is light, resting on marl. The country is a good deal ! broken, but with small flats on most of the I sections. The vegetation consists of fern, j tutu, and flax, and a little grass; with ' patches of mixed bush in the gullies. The other sections were passed in.

In the Waimata Survey District, Block ' VII., Section 6, Mr S. C. Cuultou became ; the purchaser of 310 acres 2 roods, at the ■ upset price of £232 15s. Section 8 was ; knocked down to Mr S. Greene for £4OO. It . contains 314 acres 2 roods. ! The remainder of the lots offered in this [ block were passed in. There were not bids for the sections in the Waihau and Whakaongaonga Blocks, P?»tutahi Survey District, or the Hangaroa Survey District. In Wairoa County, Taramarama Surrey District, Mr Goudy bought Block IX, Secs.’ 1 and 2, containing 359 acres and 425 ac/res I roods 39 perches, at upset prices, which were £179 10s and £212 15s, respectively. These were the only two lots sold. The Waimata Survey District Blocks under the deferred payment system, were next offered. Block XI., Section 2, 385 acres, was purchased by Mr W. K. Chaim* bers, the price being £1095. Section 3, 1098 acres, 32 perches, falling to the bid of Mr Partridge, at £lO9B ss. Block 11., 1327 acres was bought by Mr McNair, the price being £1664. All the other lots submitted were passed. The total amount realised was £10,358 15s and the number of acres being as under Pastoral, deferred payments, 3104 acres. Rural, deferred payments, 625 acres, 2 roods, II lots cash, 10,191 acres, 1 rood, 39 perches.
