CORRESPONDENCE.

We do not hold ourselves responsible for the opinions expressed by our correspondents]. — :o: TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —I observe from an advertisement in your paper, that in view of the vacancies presently arising in the Borough Council, Mr R. H. Fisher has decided to become a candidate for the office, and I think he would have been shaken in his purpose, if, before declaring his intention, he had reflected over the matter, and studied the relation there exists between himself and the Council. As o. Commissioner of the Special Loan of £lO,OOO. he is a servant of the Council, having been appointed by that body, and this being so, it would be extremely injudicious, if not injurious to the piiboc interest, to have for a representative one, ' ho is at once, a master and servant, which he would be it returned. Independent ■■ f this view of the case, as the office whir!i he holds probably carries with it some remuneration, if he were so fortunate as to attain his ambition—a seat at the Council board—he would be debarred from voting, oi' taking part in the proceedings. I say nothing as to Mr Fisher’s abilities, they may be of a superlative order as a financier, land agent, &c. During his short sojourn in our midst, he has won the respect of many in the community. If he wishes to retain this respect he would not, or ought not to venture on becoming a member of the Council while the disabilities exist. Let him retire from the office of Loan Commissioner, and then the objections would disappear ; but so long as he holds this office he will be acting altogether inconsistent v. ith it to accept the position of a Councillor. This is the view I take, and I think it will lie in accord with those held by the majority of ratepayers.! am, &c., Sigma.
