LATEST TELEGRAMS

[per united press; association]. AUCKLAND, This day. The “ New Zealand Herald ” has been permanently enlarged, and is now the largest paper in the Colony ; 12 pages on Saturday, and eight on other days. At the New Year it will be printed from one of Hoes’ web machines, which prints from a reel of paper 600 yards long, an eight-page paper, at the rate of 13,000 an hour ; cutting and folding everything, with only one man to work it. A lad at Kamo was killed while cleaning a loaded gun. The Colonial Sugar Company have obtained from the Harbor Board a 50 years’ lease of a portion of a portion of the foreshore North Shore ; 3 acres in extent; opposite the site of their refining works, the erection of which will commence forthwith. DUNEDIN, Nov. 25. Thick drizzling rain fell during the forenoon, and play was postponed in consequence till one o’clock, and although then it was still raining, Otago went in, with one wicket down for 9 runs in their second innings, and 87 to get to save defeat in one innings. Harris, the not out man of yesterday was not on the ground, and Leith took his place, with Sketch, the other “notout.” Lankham and Gill again bowled for Auckland. Each man got a single, when Gill, who was bowling with great pace, picked off Leith’s bails, 2, I—ll. Harris came in next, and after sevral runs had been added Sketch was given out leg bw. I vens took his place, but after getting a single, was bowled by Lankham, 4, I—l 9. The weather by this time was fine, and the disadvantage of a greasy ball not so much felt by the bowlers. Harris, after playing a grand innings for 23, was caught by Gill—five wickets down for 32. Holgate and Parker played successive maidens very steadily, then the latter began to score slowly, but rashly lifted one of Lankham’s into Barlow’s hands at mid-on, 6, 5—37.

The teams adjourned for lunch. Play will be resumed at 3. Otago are now 39 for six wickets. Weather splendid. This Day. At the inquest on Jno. Gordon, a verdict of temporary insanity leading to suicide while in the lock-up for being drunk, also that the usual search had not been made. A meeting of the Educational Institute reported that proposals for the formation of New Zealand Institute are progressing favorably, and Auckland, Wellington, Canterbury, and Southland have now appointed Delegates to a Conference in Christchurch during the holidays. Four Dunedin Delegates were nominated. An inquest held at Port Chalmers on Saturday revealed some extraordinary circumstances attending the death of a married woman named Mrs Anderson. On Sunday night, the 19th inst., she was walking round Deborah Bay, in company with a young

girl, when a Chilian native (so the girl declares), came up to them, and without a word struck Mrs Anderson with a piece of firewood knocking her down, The medical evidence seems to discredit the statement that the woman was struck as described, but at anyrate she fell in the road and lay there till some neighbors took her home. A peculiar feature is that her hUsbdnd; amotag others, knew her condition, and allowed her to remain out all night. Whether she was drunk on this occasion is not very clear, but she was in the habit of drinking. The jury found that death had occurred from apoplexy accelerated from intoxication and exposure. No notice was taken of the statement about the assault by the Chilian.

WELLINGTON, This Day. | The Government have received a cable from the Agent-General officially announcing the appointment of Sir William Jcrvois as Governor of New Zealand, and that his commission will be sent by the Frisco’ mail, which leaves London on Thursday next, and is due here on the 10th of January. An extraordinary birth took place at Ohau on the 23rd inst. The wife of a settler was confined of twins joined together at the back, one child is doing well, the other is poorly, but is coming round. They are both girls. With regard to the changes made in the Government insurance, it is not intended to close the industrial branch, nor to limit its sphere of usefulness, but it will be worked in complete harmony with the ordinary branch, the object of Government being to offer insurance in the form best suited to individual requirements. This would probably be gathered from our previous wires. It is not intended at present to divide profits annually, but a scheme of insurance with deferred profits, at rates lower than the non-participating rates of other offices, is about to be introduced. The next division of profit will be made as at 31st December, 1885, in accordance with the recent legislation altering the currency of the 1 financial year. The books will be closed on the 31st proximo, and an account published l for the six months, which commenced on the I Ist July last. The new insurance for cattle for more than four months of the period referred to exceed £400,000, and the business generally evinces lasting qualities. The Admiralty authorities have determined upon inviting tenders for a supply of New Zealand salt beef to the British Navy, and are therefore calling for a preliminary experimental shipment of ten 3001 b casks from each of the principal ports of this Colony. If the experiment proves satisfactory as regards quality when compared with American meat, the Admiralty will make a second trial on a larger scale, and will invite a supply of 126,00011)8 annually. At the Magistrate’s Court to-day Thomas Thompson and John Morgan were charged with having in their possession 40 gallons of whiskey, upon which the duty had not been paid. They were remanded until to-mor-row.

At the Appeal Court to-day, judgment was given in the Adams conspiracy case. Judge Johnston said the case was one of great importance, and came before the court under embarrassing circumstances. As the jury found defendants guilty their Honors were bound to assume, for purposes of this case, that the charge against Longhurst was a false one, and moreover that the circumstances proved were sufficient to prove a charge ot conspiracy, if the girl had arrived at the legal age of discretion. The specific question reserved for the Court of Appeal to determine was whether the learned judge ought not to have directed the acquittal of both the defendants on the ground, that the child was in law incapable of conspiracy as alleged in the first count of the indictment. He held that it was repulsive to common sense to believe that the child conspired, confederated and combined with her father to commit the crime, and he was therefore of opinion on the whole that there was no evidence incorporated in the case reserved, which satisfied all the requirements of the law. Regarding the rebuttal of the prima. facie presumption of innocence, which applied to children between the ages of 7 ana 14, he thought the learned Judge ought to have told the jury that there was no such evidence before them as would justify them according to law in finding that a prima facie presumption of innocence must be rebutted. Accordingly the conviction should be quashed. Judges Gillies and Williams were also of opinion that the child was incapable of conspiring, and that the judge should have directed an acquittal of both the prisoners. The conviction was thereupon quashed, and this brought the Crown cases reserved to a conclusion.

ASHBURTON, Tins Day. A man named William Fisher was charged at the Police-court this morning with indecently assaulting three little girls. The children being too young to be sworn, the charge was altered to indecent exposure. There were several previous convictions recorded against the prisoner for indecent assaults, and he was sentenced to six months’ imprisonment with hard labor.

NELSON, This Day. A fatal fire occurred yesterday afternoon in an old house on the hill above Washington Valley. It caught fire in some manner unknown. It was occupied by a man named Thomas Martin aliais Rock, Coady, and Twoney, and wife, better known as Margaret Fitzsimmons, whose former husband was in the 14th Regiment at Auckland. A young man named Pottstrade and another named James Moriatry were also living in the house. They were all in and the men quite sober, when the fire broke out. The woman was drunk. On the alarm being given, and assistance available, Martin told a constable he did not know where his wife was, but she might he upstairs. It was then impossible to get upstairs. It transpired afterwards, however, that the woman was in the front room below. Moriarty says he tried to drag her out, but she was helplessly drunk. He says he stayed till his hair caught fire. The house was completely destroyed, and the woman’s charred remains were found. (froM our own correspondent). WAIROA, This Day. A cricket match is now being played here, Wairoa v. Napier. Wairoa went in first, and scored 63. Napier followed (all out) for 34. The Wairoa men have just gone in for their second innings.
