Published Every Evening. GISBORNE : MONDAY, NOVEMBER 20, 1882.

From onr Southern files we gather that Messrs Woody ear and Ross, of the Royal Australian Circus, are making a most successful tour in the South. At Christchurch, a witness in Court, who was giving an expert opinion as to whether a man was drunk or not, asserted that he could take 30 pinta of beer and not be drunk. This, after all, is not a patch on what can be done in Gisborne. Most old residents will remember the celebrated “ Forty blooming pints.”

Jem Mace, the fistic champion of the world, was a passenger by the Rotorua yesterday, e» route for Auckland. He looked well, although a trifle on the big side. Slade the wrestler, was also on board. At the Resident Magistrate's Court this morning John Johnston, on a charge of obtaining money under false pretences, was further remanded to Friday next when he will be remanded to Timaru, there to be brought up on the charge for which he has been arrested. Frank Dawson, for having worshipped at the shrine of the rosy god, was fined 10s with costs.

The s.s. Oreti is appointed to sail for Auckland on Wednesday next. The last boat will leave the wharf at 4 o’clock in the afternoon.

The following gentlemen have been nominated as candidates for the Hawke's Bay Education Board: —The Rev. De Berdt Howell, the Rev. William Sheriffs, and Mr William White. The election will take place on the 19th December, 1882. For further particulars an advertisement which appears in another column, will show. We have been requested to state that all the overland East Coast mails, via Tologa Bay, will close to-morrow (Tuesday) afternoon, at 3 p.m. In reply to an enquiry regarding the Austral, we give the following information :— She is quite a new vessel, having been launched in December, 1881, from the yards of Messrs J. Elder and Co., of Glasgow. She is owned by the Orient Steam Navigation Company, and is classed 100 Al at Lloyd’s. Her dimensions are : Length, 456 feet; breadth, 48 feet 2 inches ; depth of hold, 33 feet 9 inches. She is constructed of steel, her gross tonnage being set down at 5588 tons, and will be remembered as as having been referred to by the London Times as a triumph of naval architecture.

The two ladies who have taken an office and gone into partnership at the Thames as sharebrokers, are by no means the first who have entered upon that rather hazardous business. At Ballarat, some twelve years ago, a female sharebroker managed to i hold her own with the smartest men on “ the ' corner ’ —but only for a short time. “ Under the verandah, in Melbourne, too, members of the softer sex have strutted their brief hour on the stage of mining speculation, but the result has not been entirely satisfactory to themselves. Perfidious man seems to be more adapted by nature to this kind of business.

The nomination for the important position of Mayor of the Borough of Gisborne took . place at the Council to-day, when Mr Pelham Richardson acted as Returning Officer. • The gentlemen nominated were Mr E. K. i Browne, onr Mr Henry Lewis. Mr Whin- ! ray proposed, and Mr Ratcliffe seconded the nomination of Mr Henry Levis as the future Mayor of Gisborne. Mr Townley proposed, and Mr Tutchen seconded, Mr Edward ! Knight Brown as a suitable candidate. The polling will take place on the 29th instant. Mr P. McFarlane in announcing his hall j alludes to the accoustics of the Academy of I Music. This wc can fearlessly endorse, as • there can de no doubt that great trouble has been taken to secure the very best sounding properties for this Hall. The internal arrangements also give proof that the spisited • proprietor intends to keep pace with the ■ times. In Bexar County, Texas, there is a farm of 8,000 acres devoted to the rearing of , Shetland and S. Kemball ponies for boys. This would be a sight for some of our youngsters, as it is said that the little animals arc as thick as a flock of sheep. The small pleasure skiff, owned by the late Mr Henry Adair, is advertised for sale elsei where. The boat should find a ready sale , now that the summer season is coming on. ; “ Riding a wild alligator is the sensational j heading of an extract from an American ' paper which appears elsewhere. Alligators ‘as a general rule are difficult to tame. We I have seen a good many birds, but that special • specimen of the feathered tribe appeared to 'us to.be untamable. Anyhow all the alliga- • tors we ever saw didn’t look amiable enough ! to sit down and have a square meal with — • unless, of course, one wanted to be the meal, i Some very fine sheep were shipped, yestcr- ; day, by Mr G. L. Sunderland for Auckland, i They certainly do credit to the Bay, and ! should realise good prices. I The deck of the Rotorua on Sunday last j resembled a hive of bees. There were 126 through passengers from the South to Auck I land. i The Carbine Champion Shot, Volunteer i Gordon, of the Thames, and other members I of the Naval Brigade who were taking part ! in the recent rifle contest at Dunedin, were ' passengers by the Rotorua yesterday. They i •were warmly congratulated here by former friends and companions. 1 The adjourned meeting of the Hospital : Committee will be held tnis evening. ' Mr M. R. Miller, stock and station agent, I of Napier, announces a very large sale of ■ stock, consisting of merinos and crossbred j sheep, and a number of cattle. Four of our law students, Messrs Day, 1 Gould, Chrisp, and Skeet, have successfully passed their preliminary examination. Wc congratulate these gentlemen, and trust that they will shortly be garbed in wigs and gowns. Special attention is directed to the adver--1 tisement which Mr G. R. Moore inserts else- ; where. During his recent visit to Auckland i ho has secured a large assortment of the : choicest articles of drapery and haberdashery I which he will sell at the very lowest prices consistent with a fair profit. Mr South, a genial and well-known comi merial traveller, brought by the Rotorua a magnificently finished bicycle with htest improvements. The front wheel is almost five feet in height, whilst the hind one is only fifteen inches. The machine is, rather a por- ' tion of it is, electroplated, and during the day ' has been much admired. Mr South gave an exhibition of his skill in Gladstone Road this I morning. ' The scenery for “Ye Old Englislie Favre, ” to be held in connection with the Presbyterian ‘ Church, arrived yesterday, by the Rotorua. Messrs J. and A. Davis, of Makaraka, adj vertise a large shipment of goods by the Loch Fleet. This firm are evidently determined to i maintain the reputation they have so deser- ' vcdly earned, and are constantly receiving fresh shipments direct from the Home Market ■ Such enterprise, and energy us that displayed by the Messrs Davis is a guarantee ef success.
