The Russian Minister of War, having found the grant of prizes for horse-racing ineffectual in inducing millitary officers to perfect themselves in riding, decided to render the races at the camp of Krasno Selo of a compulsory character. These resulted in five officers being more or less injured, a dozen horses spoilt, and one horse killed on the spot Among the winners was a son of the present Minister of the Interior. Wholesale Poisoning.—At Gross Bedskerek, South Hungary, the trial has commenced of Thekla Popov, a peasant woman, and over a hundred accomplices, who are charged with poisoning their husbands. The guilt of the prisoners has already been proved in thirty-live cases, and thirty more are strongly suspected. The Cape Government offer a large reward for the apprehension of the murderers of Lecocoeni and his son.
