(PER UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION), WELLINGTON, This Day. In the R.M. Court yesterday an Italian unable to speak English, was a defendant. Magistrate Hardcastle refused to allow counsel to enter a plea for him, although counsel said he had consulted the defendant with an interpreter. Mr Shaw, counsel for defendant, suggested it was the duty of the Court to find an interpreter, but the Magistrate said if litigants were unable to speak English they must find a linguist to interpret. The Middle Island Trunk Railway Commission have appointed Charles St. Barbe as secretary. They proceed to Blenheim on Thursday, and have telegraphed for the Company’s C.E. to give evidence. There were bonfires and discharge of Guy Fawkes’ fireworks in all directions on Monday night, to the great danger of the city from fire. A bazaar was held by the United Free Methodist congregation, and realised £535 towards the building fund. (The Government have promised to supply the Benevolent Society with funds absolutely necessary to supplement the charitable subscriptions. The Middle Island Trunk Railway Extension Commissioners intend going from Blenheim to Christchurch by the inland route and returning by the coast route, before beginning to take evidence. In the Supreme Court in banco to-day, the Law Society had filed affidavits in the case of Mr Ward, a solicitor, to answer certain charges of misconduct. Judgment had been reserved. The Chief Justice and Mr Justice Richmond, while severely reprimanding Ward, discharged the rule without costs. Applications for a new trial in Poole v. Campbell was refused.
A somewhat singular ease came before the , Court of Appeal. It appears that a Mrs Frecbody left her husband in England about eight years ago, and with an infant child arrived here. She took to drink, and has for some time been )iving with a Maori named Winnia at the Hutt. Miss Anne Frecbody, her daughter, has now’ arrived from England with a power of attorney from her father to claim possession of the child, which Winnia refuses to part with. A rule wW was granted, calling on Winnia to show cause, returnable on Saturday.
HOKITIKA, This Day. R. E. Tenant, clerk in the Government Stamp Office, was arrested yesterday on a charge of embezzling stamps and money to the value of £59. PALMERSTON NORTH, This day. NEW PLYMOUTH, This Day. The Supreme Court was occupied the whole day on the trial of Antonio Schwell, charged with having murdered Matthew Knolls, at Stratford. Mr Govett appeared as amicus curiae for the prisoner, who, when called upon to plead, said “ I have murdered him, but it was the fault of a dream.” This was taken as a plcajof “ Not guilty,” and the j trial-was then proceeded with. The medical i evidence of Dr Boar, of Nelson, was to the I effect that the man J*was of sound mind > during the time he was in the Nelson Asy- ■ him. The Jury retired at five o’clock to j consider their verdict. In the Supreme Court the trial of Antonio ' Schwell charged with having murdered ! DUNEDIN, This Day. About 1000 men are expected to take part in the review to-morrow. The weather yesterday was fine and bright until 3 p.m. when the wind changed southward, and brought down pelting rain, putting a stop to the firing.
