CORRESPONDENCE.
We do not hold ourselves responsible for the opinions expressed by our correspondents]. -:o: MR BROWNE’S LETTER RE ELECTION OF MAYOR. TO TrtE EDITOR OF THE STANDARD. Sir.-—There appeared in the Herald of the 4th inst. a letter signed “James Browne,” referring to the manner in which hotelkeepers block vote candidates for municipal honours. I can only say that lam not one for block voting, but for giving each candidate a fair and impartial chance. Mr Browne must surely be characteristic of either a fool or a deceiver ; he tries in his letter to persuade a thinking public to act in accordance with his views (such as they are). I spoke to Mr Browne on the subject, and his reply was that what he writes he gets paid for. Well, if so, I cannot see much good sense displayed in his writing the ideas of others ; in abusing persons against whom he entertains no animus (so he says), but simply runs down their reputation because he is paid for so doing, and boldly signs his name to such an insinuating epistle—such is Mr Browne’s characteristic manner of writing.—lam, &c., E. P. Joyce.
[ls it, or is it not, a fact that it was by compulsion Mr James Browne signed his name instead of plume.— Ed P.B.S.]
