. ,A much-felt want in the Poverty Bay Dis* ■ trlct has hitherto been the absence of due communication with the coastal ports such as i Tologa Bay, Tuparoa, and Awanui, and i thence northward. Vessels frequently leave ! Gisborne with cargo for these and interme- ' diate coastal ports on their voyage to Auckland, and, after leaving here we hear nothing of them until their arrival in Auckland is telegraphed. The rapid strides towards population which the East Cocat is making surely deserves fostering encouragement by equally rapid strides iri iirtriiediate odifimtinication by post and telegraph. To this end a petition has been set afoot praying the Government to grant us such assistance as our requirements may deserve, and the reasonable exigencies of the case may demand, We have not loafed much upon the Government funds, and considering that for every one pound they expend upon our district we return them ten, one way and another, we think it may be reasonably expected that we should have help in this matter. Everyone will recognize tin* importance of increased facilities for communication with the coastal districts ami the interior, and will, beyond the shadow of a doubt aid to the utmost of their endeavors in obtaining such an increase. Signatures to the petition referred to will greatly conduce to the desired end. The Tologa Bay settlers are about to receive the benefit of the Licensing Act. A quarterly meeting of the Court is advertised to be held on Friday, the Ist of December next, at the Tologa Bay Court-house at noon. Applications must be delivered, duly stamped, at least 21 days before the meeting. ' One or two people came to the Standard Office this morning to withdraw their advertisements in consequence of a leader u hich appeared in our columns yesterday advocating the claims of Mr Henry Lewis to the Mayoralty. Let them be easy, they won’t make or break the Standard, and if they
think that we are going to prostitue our , political views tn serve anv particul ir cause, or to make profit accrue to ourselves, they are egregiously in error. Our views are > not narrow-minded, but the fact of people ■ thinking to influence us by such means is contemptible and deserves the lash of satire. [ Advertisement or no advertisement, the value we give is well worth the reinunera- ■ tion we receive for it, and we don’t intend - to allow such paltry actions to influence uh f in the least. We shall possibly have more i to say on this head shortly. ’ The recent rains have much improved the prospects of the coining season, and the grass seed crop will not be the failure which ' was anticipated. A ride into the country p proves this conclusively to any observan [ person. j Mr A. Gillice. who resides between Wae- , renga-a-hika and Ormond, has at present - about two and a half acres of land planted , with hops, which are coming along splendidly, and will, no doubt, prove profitable. i Messrs Win. Ratcliffe and Co. advertise in J another column that the allotment of shares in the Mutual Fire and Marine Insurance 3 Company of New Zealand have been posted - to the applicants for shares in this district, f and that the first call must be paid to the J Company’s credit at the Union Bank of Aus- > tralia, on or before the 14th inst. * We would call the attention of the Harbor , Board to the complaints made some few weeks back in the columns of this nnper regardiiif ’ the exorbi'aut <• urges made to t-he pilot, boat* 5 men for rent of the cottages on the Pilot tta--5 tion. I We learn that the Directorate of the Southern Cross Petroleum Company have elected to proceed with the boring from the present level instead of sinking, as the manager proposed to the 200 ft. level previous to commencing boring. We are inclined to think with the m mager, that the shaft should be carried to the 200 ft. level first, in order that freer vent may be ensured, and the nature of the ground hardened. However we suppose the Directorate have maturely i considered the matter. We hope sincerely, as we believe sincerely, that the boring will not have to be carried to any exi cessive depth before the oil deposit is ' tapped, and that the result of the borings | will be equal to our expectations. ( A rehearsal in connection with the concert i to be given in aid of the Hospital funds took place last evening The intending performers gave abundant, evidence of their ability to i keep an audience amused and delighted As will be noticed by the programme, Mr Finlay will sing “ In the Glo-iming,” instead of “'•'rtilors on the Sen,” and Mr Edwards intends tn substitute “ Maid <>f Kt ens ’’for the sung he originally intended to sing. 1 At t.' <> ratf le sale held by Messrs. Messrs Graham, Pitt and Bennett have been instructed by Mr J. Parker to sell, at Makaraka, on Wednesday next, seven firstclass milking cows and three springers to calve at the close of the summer, This is an opportunity which should not be lost sight of by those desirous of securing good stock.
Poor dear old Wickham 1 How happy he seems to be in his comfortable imbecility. For a real old inkslinger commend us to the village blacksmith, but he need not grudge us that eiass beer ;we remember his making two hundred glasses uf beer oni? day ior emptying his ink pnt on our devoted bead. But. then be didn’t drink it all. He took a Utile of it home in the comfortable shape nf coin of the realm, which is more easily pnrf.ahla than beer. (No pun meant, Wickham, on my air.) The worst of it is, Kerr didn’t drink the beer. It was that confounded somnolent, one of ours, who wasn’t fast asleep upon that occasion. In fact he showed himself rather wide awake. Never mind, Wickham, old man. There’s plenty more at the Occ., and it’s nice and handy Take a pint on our hook, old man, s you go “ round the pubs.”
The sale of privileges this afternoon amounted to £165 18s fid for the Makaraka and Waerenga-a-hika races to come off on t.he 9th and 10th inst. Mr S. Stevenson got the gates at Makaraka for £57, and Mr Win. Cooper those at Waerenga-a-hika for £29. For the Grandstand and enclosure at Makaraka, Mr W. Bailey gave £lB, and at Waerenga-a-hika, Mr W. Cooper gave £9. The outside booth was secured by Mr J, R. Scott for £2O 10a for the 9th, and for the 10th Mr Cooper gave fora similar privilege £l3 10s. The others are unimportant.
Several matters of interest have had to be held over including a letter to the editor ngned by a well-known citizen, who has h ”vevpr appended the remark that he is “ too old a bird to bo caught with chaff.”
