A wager of £25 to 4 was laid by a local j mcttalician to-day against Filthy Lucre for the Ladies Race and Ta -tar for the Handi- ; cap at the Makaraka Race Meeting. Morning' Gallops at MakarakaThe course this morning was very well at- I tended, and in addition to those directly in- ' terested, there were a number of spectators < present on the ground. Seagull was the first to strip, and as usual at the back of the course He was indulged in a hand gallop for a mile, and was then joined by Mr J. Price’s hack, who although exhibiting a turn of speed was unable to keep pace with “ the gull ” who travelled well and strong. This horse is looking well and is thoroughly fit, and his trainer certainly deserves credit for the condition in which he will bring his charge to the post. Trovatore did a useful spin for a mile when he was joined by Luck’s All, the pair finishing fast. Trovatore’s style of going I must repeat I do not like, but he seems to gut over the ground well, and although the roan was fresh he could not gain a point on his stable companion who finished without showing signs of distress. Wild Dayrell was next sent two miles, and I must confess I admire his style of going. He strides along with apparent ease and covers a lot of ground. After the first mile he was joined by the Barb who performed exceedingly well, and gave evidence that with careful training, although not approaching his grand sire “ The Demon ” he has a turn of foot. His distance however I would put down as being about three quarters of a mile, Seaboy did good and serviceable work. The more I see of th|s youngster, the more I like him. He does his work faithfully and well, and had he been longer in hand I certainly should select him for any of the events for which he has been entered. Gundagai did slow work for two miles but appears to me to be altogether too big, and in addition to this the accident he met with to his fetlock will no doubt affect his chances. Gisborne, with Jimmy Redman up, did two miles work. Fit and well I should be inclined to select him for the handicap, but 1 can’t forget that leg. and as he may at any time come to grief, the chance of his winning is a risky one. Ericthoneous and Slim Jim’’next raced a mile together. The former had about three stone the best of it, aud gave “Barnum’s Ticket Taker ” about a half stone licking. Filthy Lucre, with her owner (Mr Hubert Towsey) up, did a useful sweat under clothing. This little mare under the careful training she is receiving, should make it warm for some of those entered for the Ladies Race. She* is full of heart and in fact almost takes charge of her rider. This fault the owner should take measures to correct.
Tartar was the last to appear and did a capital two mile gallop, being extended during the last one. He seemed to be in splendid fettle, and finished up as strong as a tiger. Hotspur.
