THE GISBORNE HARBOR BOARD.

Present—-Messrs J. Townley (in the chair), H. Lewis, J. Tutchen, H. Clayton, and J. Whinray. MINUTES of previous meeting. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. CORR ESPONDENCE. The outgoing correspondent was read and approved of. A letter was read from Secretary of the Marine Department as follows, relative to the foreshore :— “ Marine Department, “ Wellington, 26th Oct., 1882. “The Secretary of the Gisborne Harbor Board. “Sir, —With reference to your letter of the 7th instant I have the honor to forward herewith a tracing of the laud described in the schedule to the Gisborne Harbor Board Act, 1882, and to state that 1 will bring the question of granting this land to the Board under the notice of the Honorable the Minister having charge of this department on his return to Wellington, he being expected to return in a few days.—l have, &c., “William Seed.” It was resolved that the letter be acknowledged. engineer's report. Harbour Board Office, Oct. 31, 1882. Sin, —1 have the honor to report, that in accordance with a resolution of your Board, plans and specifications are in hand for the construction of a breastwork between the New Wharf and the Cattle Yard, also proposed alterations to the latter, As the plans and specifications will require to be forwarded to the Marine Board for apI would l«cy t-? enggegt tbfttacouu

plete plan of the foreshore be majle from the Borough reserve at Bright -street to the Waikanae stream ; showing all the details of the proposed works, viz., breastwork and reclamation. In the event of the same being approved of your Board could proceed with such portions of the work as they may, from time to time, deem advisable. In order to carry out this work an accurate survey of the river, from the above two points; would require to be made between high and low water lines ; also the subdivision of the foreshore, into such sized allotments as may be considered most advisable, fixing the width of Read’s Quay at one chain. The time likely to be occupied for field and office work I estimate at one month, but should your board decide upon forwarding plans and specifications of that portion between the Wharves only, the same might be completed in time to forward by the outgoing mail. Cattle Wharf.—Upon a further inspection of the Cattle Wharf, I am of opinion that by an outlay of about £3O the same might be made serviceable for the next three or four years ; the greater portion of the deck has been renovated, and if sill pieces can be introduced, and the defective portions of the piles removed, by the use of screw-jatks the whole structure could be brought to its true level. Of course this work wholly depends upon the soundness of the piles below lowwater mark.

Passenger Landing.—ln filling in between the wharves the present landing and steps will require to be removed, and I would suggest that they be placed on the lower side of Adair's store; which I am of opinion would afford easy access, and could be completed at a small cost.—l am, etc., J. Drummond, Engineer.

It was resolved that the Engineer should be instructed to chain off the distance from Maori Point. Mr Whinray thought that the Engineer should be instructed to gain information as to the exact grant for the foreshore.

It was also proposed by Mr Lewis, seconded by Mr Clayton, and carried, that plans and specifications for the removal of the cattle wharf, and filling in, be prepared by the Engineer, and placed before the Board at their next meeting. the foreshore. It was proposed by Mr Whinray, seconded by Mr Tutchen, and carried that the Engineer prepare a plan of the foreshore in accordance with his report. LANDING STAGE. It was resolved that the landing stage be removed to the north end of the wharf, and that in reference to the cattle wharf, the former resolution should be carried out. BRIDGE OVER TAKVIIERU RIVER. It was proposed by Mr Whinray, seconded by Mr Tutchen, and carried nem. con., that the Secretary write to the Government re the bridge over the Taruheru river, and request that enquiries be made by the Government as to whether they will take such steps as will lead to the opening of the bridge. The Board adjourned at 8.45 p.m.
