It would appear that the lines of the East Coast Land and Settlement Company were not altogether cast in pleasant places, when they started to negotiate for the purchase of the Whataupoko Block. Every one more or less acquainted with the complicated history of that block were aware that a smouldering Hr* existed uudor the accumulated heap of documents representing the history of that Block. To-day the application of Messrs. W. L. Rees, Wi Pure, and the Native Chieftainess, Riperata Kaiivtia, for the Trust Commissioners’ certificate to a deed of conveyance of 12,400 acres of that Block to the New Zealand Land and Settlement Company, came before Mr Matthew Price. The alienation was formidably objected to on various grounds by Mr. Gannon, and by Mr. Andrew Graham, through their solicitors, Messrs. Brassey and Frazer. As the case was adjourned for a week we will defer further comment at present.
