Opening of the Rowing Season.
The Gisborne Rowing Club opened to-day with the usual procession. We were somewhat surprised at seeing so poor an attendance, not alone of members, but also of spectators. In previous years we have seen the river bank lined, but only a solitary few this afternoon put in an appearance. The procession started at 3 o’clock, the Captain, Mr E. H. Pavitt, leading in a small skiff. The order of the procession was as follows :— Undine : E. A. Pavitt, stroke; C. Ward, 3 ; A. N. Gibbons, 2; McLean, bow; Morgan, cox. Mermaid: Tabuteau, stroke: Gould, 3, Cresswell, 2; Blakey, bow; Teat, cox. Lurline : Barnes, stroke ; Bruce, 3 ; Monnaghan, 2; Brown, bow ; Chrisp, cox. Pinafore : Bourne. Hinemoa : W. Ratcliffe. Private boats, one of which was manned by ladies. Some pretty good form was shown, but in one or two instances it was evident that great improvement was necessary.
